First of all, not all plants have a symbiotic relationship with other plants -- bananas included.
But of course when space is limited, we'd like to increase the plant density and get the most from our garden. For bananas, a very good choice is pineapples. The root competition is minimal and the shade afforded by the banana leaves is appreciated by the pineapples. It is easy to start pineapples from pineapple fruit tops -- but those were grown in the tropics. Check out the threads on this site for some better choices for your area.

I have sweet potato growing near my banana plants but I don't know how much they compete. They have both been doing well though as far as I can tell.

I had a Pineapple that got huge last year, Cucumbers and Peppers is all I've tried when it comes to edibles. I'm trying grapevines, have a saw palm that's been next to a banana for years.. :^)

Agree, pineapples will do well, even without too much sun. They are slow growing though and might take 2 years to fruit.
I've also seen papaya interspersed between bananas on some commercial properties.
Lately I've been growing Marigolds under the nanners. Not just any marigolds, though. I use Nemagone from Burpee and/or Golden Guardian from Park seed. They will drop enough seeds to re-populate the plants without re-seeding, at least for a couple of years. Lots of nematodes here in South Florida.
Good luck!
