View Full Version : Not FHIA-18? Any ideas?

So I bought this as an FHIA-18 and now it's flowering. About 6' tall, and surprisingly has 9 hands. Now at the male flower stage, they're all pale yellow and actually have pollen. The p-stems are very colorful, but they are not thick, and look nothing like my FHIA-01 which makes no sense given how closely related they are supposed to be.

The angle of the bunch is odd. The bud before the fruit began to be visible was small, long, and narrow, and more like cavendish types I have.

I'm at a loss for what this is. Could the seller have confused it with another FHIA type?

What types commonly have pollen? I don't think I've ever noticed pollen before on one of my male flowers of the couple dozen other cultivars that I've had fruit so far.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Rose maybe? Just a guess.

I was wondering that too. does seem colorful like Rose, and not a huge plant either.

Looking at Jon's pictures and posts, he mentioned a horizontal bunch, the male flowers look the same and in one picture there is even pollen. The erect, kind of narrow leaves also leads me to think that's what it is. The male bud also looks similar, and the fruit has retained pistils as mine do.

Do you have any dimensions? I'd assume yours would be bigger because they are in the tropics (and because Rose does not like our winters), but Jon's are quite small and slender. Going off of my memory, I'd say his were 6' to 7' high.

That was actually another thing that seems similar to Rose. Mine is a bit over 6' and slender. I'd say the most slender of any cultivar I have at flowering. Am really surprised that this little plant is putting out 9 hands of fruit.

Despite being in the tropics, many of my bananas tend to be a bit shorter than normal. I think because having no soil to retain moisture, they don't get as tall as in other parts of Hawaii that do have soil.

Rose maybe? Just a guess.

Couple of photos from NANAMAN (http://www.bananas.org/member-nanaman.html) of his rose for comparison.

I agree it's rose.:08:

Mine looks much more colorful than Nanaman's, but looks the same otherwise, especially the one with the horizontal bunch.

Could be Rose. Almost certainly an AA variety given the slender p-stem and horizontal bunch. Definitely not a FHIA named variety, which are all tetraploids.
