Here it is the day I planted it . 05 / 24 / 13

Here it is just before winter when I was air layering it .
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/hgils/20130902_113045-1.jpg (http://s226.photobucket.com/user/hgils/media/20130902_113045-1.jpg.html)

Here after this winter ,,, We never saw freezing weather ! It got to 40 a few times, and 50's....
All the old growth leaves fell the first night at 45, One gust of wind the next day and it was almost nacked!
ha ha not a good thing watch as your tree is blowing away. But its in a total sun location I believe that helped
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/hgils/20140207_093308.jpg (http://s226.photobucket.com/user/hgils/media/20140207_093308.jpg.html)

Just today I took this picture of the new growth and as long as it don't drop down to cold any more it will replace the leaves quickly..
Now to all you northern guys who see fall every year this is kinda dumb to you.
But to us southern peeps loosing leaves is WEIRD!
The tree is now 7 months old !

I have soursop that's been in the ground for about the same time. (Slow grower!)

It's not in full sun, actually it's in a corner protected by the fence and bananas.

I was able to put a plastic 40gal drum over it when we got those back to back cold fronts.

Lost a few leafs but nothing like above.

OP, you are air layering it before it fruits - Was it successful?

I was told all guanabana/soursop are true to seed?

I think I have 2 seedlings that stuck together, I fear that's why it's growing so slow.

Congrats on the snap back! Cover her well next year.

Yes I air layered it and I got the plant in a container in my back yard (for back up) . Plus I have some seedlings . My friend down the street has a older tree in his back yard,
He also planted his in the back corner as you did. It took a long time but once the tree saw the sunrise it took off. His fence blocked the light from the east and south.
And yes Soursop grow true to seed. Im sure there will be some difference in the taste of the fruit but all will grow and bare fruit, They grow pretty fast in full sun.. Im am addicted to the smell from the leaves..

Did you plant a seed or get one in a container. How old or how long you had it growing? Fruit ? How long before you got fruit? ha ha Questions I always got them:ha:

Haha, no worries... I have three growing in pots. one that I bought 2-3 years ago that I have trimmed into a 4' bush and two that I grew from seed that are about a year old. The one that I bought was maybe 2-3' when I got it and flowered back in Oct-Nov but the flower dropped off. It flowered again before our last temperature dip and there's one flower holding on, but there isn't a single leaf on the tree so I'm waiting for it to drop off at any time. From my experience with annonas (sugar apple and cherimoya) they typically fruit within 3-4 years from seed in zone 9b so hopefully I get something this year.

here's when I got it:

now that i look at it i think it's a cuban tree frog. there used to be a green one, but maybe it got eaten.

i think the concern is valid in areas where it is readily available and for folks that are consuming large amounts for medical reasons (i.e. for cancer treatment), but i don't think you need to be concerned if you are eating the fruit every once in a while, especially if you are consuming the flesh and not the seeds/leaves which contain more alkaloids. the studies referenced look at extracts from the bark and root which contain the highest alkaloid content. the do not address how alkaloids interact with the body when exposed in small amounts.

"This study suggests that alkaloids from A. muricata can modulate the function and the survival of dopaminergic nerve cells in vitro. It is therefore conceivable that repeated consumption could cause the neuronal dysfunction and degeneration underlying the West Indian parkinsonian syndrome"

Yes they had TESTS and STUDIES.
When I was a young kid in the 5th grade we had a guy come in my class and show a drawing of a car floating in the air and the people in it were all screaming, wide blood shot eyes. The faces were almost pornographic in the truest sense. They were flying high on MARAWINA! Then in upper grades I saw many films about . Mary Jane and how it destroys brain cells. Later in the Army I saw more evidence that one puff of this evil weed would reek havoc on my cognitive thought , my depth perception, my entire life would be damaged with the first puff… Today its legal in two states and more are considering removing it from the law books. This by the way will surly empty the jails of thousands of people who were selling it to do things like collage, mortgage and credit card debt.
Its kinda like anything that is so simplistic as a plant might be helpful to society “is bad” . Id love to say it’s a big business scare tactic to keep the simple healing properties of plants away from the public . But that would mean I would be some kind of a crazy guy who has conspiracy theory as an agenda.
In Central America Sour Sop is a normal part of many flavors offered in stores that people eat every day..
None of what I just typed means I think poorly of anyone who shows me this type of article ! Its interesting reading loaded with astonishing vocabulary that’s necessary to identify a complete thought in one word.

Experts caution against soursop fruit to fight cancer |CTCA (http://www.cancercenter.com/discussions/blog/experts-caution-against-soursop/)Read the comments. The cancer folks do not want anything to interfere with the big bucks they get from mainstream treatments or approved clinical trials . (I can only imagine how much Cancer Treatments Centers of America spends on advertising. Someone pays for that--soursop wouldn't unless they can license it.)

You read all the comments. You got to be kiddingSure did. My mother had colon cancer; she didn't pass from it (massive brain bleed) but, as her medical rep, I was very involved in her treatment (only surgery--1 colon and 2 liver resections) for several years. Her initial surgery was at a "non profit" hospital--horrid place where money was King and she left after a month with a roaring case of C-Diff so was back for 3 weeks 2 weeks later. (BTW, I was told she had less than 6 months to live.)

When it recurred 2 years later, I found Lombardy and a superb surgeon; her last surgery was at NIH. (She was too old and had too many other issues to be in clinical trials.) The latter 2 institutions wanted to learn and didn't try to kick me out when I asked if I could walk her in the ICU but instead set up her lines and let us go. Perhaps soursop would have saved her additional surgeries; it would not have prolonged her life because cancer was not why she died.

I have little faith in the cancer protocols in this country.

ETA: My mother passed the LA bar 2 months after turning 21. She was a law abiding citizen but she believed that marijuana should be legal.

What does your mother passing the bar at 21 have to do with legalizing pot ?

Perhaps soursop would have saved her. Maybe the doctors should have smoke MJ perhaps that would have helped.

I guess we all have some different cultivars. Same family, but different in some ways. Or the age of the trees is making them all act different. 60 aint even cool :) ... Darn being in the Keys you should have no problems with that tree! Its Old man winter we need to kick him back up north..
My neighbor a couple doors down has one in his back yard and he lost leaves and has fruit set on it as yours did. Yes I believe he said it already had flowers when it got cold. I haven’t looked at it lately but if I get a chance I will go peek at it. His tree is at least 7 years old . I sold him a Mango about 5 years ago I remember him saying at that time it was 2 yrs old..

TWINS! :woohoonaner: Avocado do that quite often.. I usually cut one of them off.
Sour Sup are really good looking trees ! Or at least thats my view of them. Driving around I see very few of them. But to my surprise in a local grocery store they are selling Sour Sup in a stand alone freezer . Ya get a small frozen package kinda like a pop cycle for $1.25 .. Pretty good ! I tried them .. If I can get over there and remember I take a few pictures of them
