Hi - I'm wondering if we have any cold hardy avocado growers in the south zone 9 - looking for anyone near Abbeville, LA, Pensacola or
Biloxi .
Thanks,
Jose

Well, up here in NE I have to keep them in pots or they'll freeze to death no matter what variety! :ha:

LOL Hey TJ
As you know I can kill just about any variety myself:}
I have an avocado cemetery here in Lizard Creek....
I'm hoping Ms. Holland can help me alter my avocado killing reputation lol

Hi TJ,
Well I was growing avocados but after this ice storm I might be growing nothing. If they don't make it I will give it another shot. I didn't give them a fair shake and didn't get them properly protected. It will be interesting to talk to Skeet and see how his mature tree is handling the cold. I was just outside and there's an eighth of an inch of ice on all the branches. the icing is supposed to continue for another 5 to 6 hours. Hopefully I won't have any branch breakage.

Snookie - Of course you know that's why you got one - the supreme test. Seriously, I hope your Ms. Holland breaks that streak and thrives for you. we may be asking for graft wood if it does. I'm worried that Skeet's tree which is still young and in ground may succumb to this winter blast. If his Ms. Holland does survive we will know for sure about the cold hardy claims.
Happy winter everyone

Shouldn't the ice provide more protection from the cold? I know when oranges are still on the trees farmers mist the crops with water in hopes the ice will provide some cold protection. Which avocado variety do you have?

Country - Like nanas, cados are not very cold hardy. Some of us are trying to push the envelope and grow cados in zone 8 - 9. Mexican varieties seem to be the most cold hardy. It seems that the best cold hardy cado varieties were seedlings discovered in someone's back yard and scions taken and grafted to good root stock.
My 3 cados are young still in pots. I forgot and left them out overnight last week. The Hass which is older and hardened with brown wood nearly bought it. A Fantastic and a Lila purchased from HD earlier this year and still green and tender showed no damage at all.
A non-commercial variety named Ms/Mrs. Holland is also very cold hardy - recent grafts didn't take on my (Skeeter) grafted plant - hoping his tree survived so we can try again. :0519:

I had 3 three-year-old avocado plants that I grew from seed on my porch. I forgot to bring the in one night, and the temps went into the 20's. The plants were pretty well fried, so I got my loppers and cut them back to about 4 inches above the soil line where I still saw some green cambium. I now see little nodes/buds starting to grow. I think they might survive.
