Saw a pic of a HUGE banana plant in front of a ?blue house. The plant was on the side, taken from far away -as one could see the whole side of house and plant. The plant was taller than the apex of the house. Been TRYING to find it; going back & looking in my history pages to -to no avail.
Does anyone have an idea where to look?

Holy Moly Cow... that's a big'un... but, no, this plant was right in front of the side of the house
House was dark blue/grey I'm thinking. You could see the whole house side, plant and sky behind- was taken a good distance so as to show the enormous size of the plant.
But... thank you!! bunches!

Wow.. some big B plants. Am able to show my better half what I mean (but darn, still not the one in front of the side of a blue/grey house) :-(
But, GREAT pics to help get my point across.
THANKS!

I think that pic might be one that Abnshrek posted. I think the banana was a tall Orinoco, and I think it was against a side of the house with a wooden outdoor staircase going up behind the banana to the 2nd floor/'attic landing' of the house. I think the house was blue.
Abnshrek, am I remembering that right? Does that ring a bell?

Well I'll be... that "Rmplmnz's Saba" pic illustrates what I was trying to tell my other half even better than the house pic I was looking for... although .... I laughed when I saw the blue house pic posted because it totally fits my description... yet isn't the one (say the above house pic is taken at ? maybe 5-5:30 of the apex... the one I was looking for would be more like 7-7:30 and double or so the distance).
REGARDLESS, my better half can now see how big some of these puppies get!
For that, thank you BOTH bunches!

Yes its real, but is technically an ensete and not a banana (musa). They do eventually produce little seeded bananas though, but dont naturally produce pups like musa.

Thanks Richard!
That banana patch was epic....I prepped the soil with 1,000 pounds of shrimp shells I got (for free) from a local shrimp processing plant (fights nematodes) and a 1,000 pounds of horse poo (for free from a local stable)..and then the rains came....8 hurricanes in 4 years...
The pseudostems were over five feet in circumference....
I later planted a Red Iholene in the same area that grew over 20 feet...Don & Katie Chafin, Going Bananas still have pictures I gave them that they display in a little book at plant shows/sales...

Okay... Big Daddy's a Saba... what is typical of the taste of those, which is my primary concern? Can you describe flavor/texture? Secondly, what's production like (do you have to wait awhile for them to mature for production)?
I'm zone 9.

I am a big fan of Hua Moa. I've figured out when to use it for the various plantain recipes that I cook on a regular basis.
Mysore is the best small banana that I have tasted, Nam Wah is good but I'd rather have a mysore. Mysore also doesn't have problems with Panama disease.
Goldfinger is a great variety, it taste great, and it's resistant to disease.
Awesome Nicolas..I agree on Hua Moa..first banana plant I ever acquired (1993) from Going Bananas..based on Mrs. Lessard's (Bill Lessard sold GB to Don & Katie) recommendation.
1. Hua Moa
2. Hua Moa Saba
Both can be eaten:
* fried ripe or green
* Eaten out of hand ripe
* Boiled green
* Tostones
* Awesome when microwaved for 60 seconds or so and placed on frozen yogurt (or Coconut Ice Cream for the Vegans).
Taste is discretionary...but I think a ripe Saba is as fine a tasting banana as I have ever experienced (out of 50 or so varieties....sans Fehi :-)

Thanks for the information. Mysore is on my list of three and so is a dwarf Namwah... but don't know if I'd be doubling up on varieties so similar that I would lose having any variety -as I only have places for 3 types.
:-) more research!

The good news is there is a wealth of information on the Org site.
It comes down to three things....
1)Climate
2)Palate (Your palate)
3)Plant Size..
1) Can you plant very cold sensitive varieties??
2)My top bananas rarely make any one else's top list...I love super super hott food (I ate 10 Munchie's 420 cafe wings in 3 1/2 minutes...see the only Hott challenge Adam failed in Man vs. Food)..yep my picture is in the Hall of Fame..
MJMS- Man Vs Food 420 Cafe Hot Wings 091609 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gsTxx2SuVk)
So I do not like sweet foods....I like a dense banana Saba, Hua Moa, Fehi, Ele Ele...and occasionally a sweet banana..like a "perfectly" ripe Ice Cream (no better banana on the planet)..
3)Space...how tall a plant you can handle...
