View Full Version : The cold hardiness of Veinte Cohol

Hello Veinte Cohol Fans!
I am very much interested in collecting Veinte Cohol.
Almost every thing is clear so far except its cold hardiness.
I live in a place arond 9a/b and I intend to grow it in the ground
and overwinter it also in the ground within a considerable rate of
degradation on the plant.
So the cold hardiness is an important factor that I never can neglect.
So can anybody answer me about its hardiness?

I hear it's very cold sensitive, probably on par with the Cavendish or Red varieties. I haven't grown it myself so I can't say for sure. I have tried the fruit, and they weren't particularly impressive either. It could have just been because they came off of a very sad plant and were the size of large marbles.

I currently have two of them, both under two years old, and in containers.
I obtained them from a members plant in southern Florida.
I do not have too much observation time.
But this is what I know so far.
It is compact fast grower and fills the container with roots pretty quick.
I just checked mine in the basement storage area and one seems to be doing fine while the other one might be suffering alittle more.
They endured cool October nights of 39 degrees and up.
Currently they are kept in a dim 65 degree basement, along with other banana buddies.

Let me count the ways that I tried to kill this one.. Pic taken 111013
1st tires were low when trying to put this one up and rolled off my small dolly down the stairs.. I still had 6 inches of stem when I re-potted it and it started to grow from center.. I put the plant in the shop next to a heater and that's when the 22F came along. I didn't have a sensor out there so I can't tell you how cold it got but it rotted in place..
My other large pup in my banana storage looks like crap (of course it's near a wall & window), and its 59F currently.. Hopefully I can keep the stem intact on that one.. That would give me a shot @ fruiting 2 next year.. :^)

Thanks Migael, what size stem is needed to start with in order to get fruit in the same year?

Good Q? Keith.. :^)
If you have one like in the pic in the fall in these parts the next growing season no problem, roughly 3', but less than 4'.. Up here where things slow down its best to have time for plant to strengthen before it flowers thus getting the most out of production and for what you put into it.. :^)

Mine came to me in The middle of the summer a 12" and medium stem thickness. Logees shipped it in perfect shape. Put it in te greenhouse a couple weeks ago. It handed a few 39-35 temps fine. It's 4ft and very thick p-stem. So it grew quick even being in partial shade.

The importance of Viente Cohol to folks in colder zones is its short cycle. Not cold tolerance. Short cycle time will get you harvestable fruit in one season so cold is a never mind.
U of Ga has been pushing the VC for a while.
Need to plant 3 to 4 ft tall pups when danger of frost is past and you should harvest before first cold snaps in Oct. This is the scenario for south central and coastal GA.
The VC is not cold hardy at all. It doesn't have to be for GA like zones as I just pointed out.
Another way of saying this is ---- if you live where summer temps average high 60s low 70s you got no business growing bananas. Don't be a banana head --- grow what works!!!!

So were do you get 3 to 4 ft. pups ? Do you have someone in Florida raise them for you ?

Fingers crossed for next season, mine are about four feet tall.

Yeah --- me.
A club member gave me his whole mat. Have been giving VC pups away as freebies with regular orders.
Splitted the mat and have 2 now. Next year lots of pups and 2 bunches of fruit.

Well, compared to Alabama, where my sister lives, too, it sure is. But I have no complaints with high 60's to low 70's all summer long, even if my bananas grow slowly. They eventually make tasty fruit for me, even if they test my patience. They payoff is winter is warm relative to AL.

Yeah your winter lows are usually milder than ours. I like my heat.

My VH is in a pot and about 2-3' tall. It has been growing very slowly for me. Maybe there is not enough heat in coastal SoCal for it. It spent the past two weeks outside with lows around 40, seemingly without problems. I did bring it into my garage for two nights when it got into the upper 30's. It is back outside now and seems fine.

There's a club? I'll bet there's a secret handshake that nobody told me about. Drat! Oh, wait, there's probably an initiation ritual also. No thanks!

The actual requirement is growing a banana until it bears fruit - regardless whether it is an edible or ornamental type. :)
The actual requirement is growing a banana until it bears fruit - regardless whether it is an edible or ornamental type. :)I'm late to the game but I'm working on that. I'd really prefer dressing silly and drinking some nice home brewed wheat beer (grain only) provided by my sponsor(s). Add something smoked low and slow to nibble on and I'd become that dancing Chiquita lady in a heartbeat! ;)

Sort of. I pay my annual dues this month and remain a member of my rare fruit club. Everybody should join a local club and benefit from the speakers and the contacts. I now pay 1/3 of what the nurseries charge for fertilizer after learning about the local AG supplier. Also get to sell lots of naner pups at auction.
How many of youse guys can say they got to talk several times to professor Jonathan Crane , Department of Horticultural Sciences, University of Florida, Tropical Research and Education Center, Homestead.
Woooohoo Nanerr.
Membership | Treasure Coast Rare Fruit Club (http://treasurecoastrarefruitclub.com/membership/)I'll check it out but I did my driving in 2012; I've cut back a lot in 2013. In 2014 I'm hoping to park the truck and become a hermit. Grow my nails really long and become a little more eccentric. Okay, I checked it out. Is this all they're growing? What’s Growing? | Treasure Coast Rare Fruit Club (http://treasurecoastrarefruitclub.com/whats-growing/) Harumph! I have a DC here in River City (I think that's what it's called)! I win! Why? Because I can spell banana...

:nanerwaveytrain:Honestly, that's what Jville is called; this is a very odd place in which I've alighted. Once upon a time I could run the table; these days I'm lucky if I don't send the cue flying. (Viewers who duck quickly are also lucky.)
I joined a swap site with no action here; finding kindred spirits (gardeners) has not been easy here so if anyone has a valid link for Jville groups--post, please!

So Kat2, you don't know about the Trouble In River City (http://www.angelfire.com/musicals/thespia/mm/mmsongs.html#trouble), especially after the warning given on the train in Rock Island (http://www.angelfire.com/musicals/thespia/mm/mmsongs.html#island) ?

Membership | Garden Club of Jacksonville (http://gardenclubofjacksonville.org/membership/)Thank you. Mandarin is probably kinda snobby but maybe I can don my impeccably white gardening gloves and "pass". The other I doubt would be a problem.
Great searching! "My hat's off to you" as my HS principal would say when he was pleased. (Emphasis on the "hat's" and said very long and s l o w. Made us all giggle but I doubt any of us have forgotten him.) Joe Link, owner of the bar where I cocktail waitressed (BYOB) as an 18 year old sophomore in Asheville also left an impression. "I'm going to tell you like it T I S." as he slammed his fists on the bar to make sure you were listening. We did or at least I did. He scared me.

I've only been involved with live productions!
I've only been involved with live productions!I'm much too shy to act except the one time my HS speech teacher (in charge of dramatic productions) conned me into playing the part a shy girl in Up the Down Staircase. I think I was Carole and messed it up; I was nervous, not an actress and did not suit the character with my matter of fact/sarcastic delivery. Went to college that fall and froze when I was videotaped for speech class. Skip ahead a few years...I'm in front of a live (political/critical) audience, being filmed for local TV and didn't care; I spoke passionately from my heart about a zoning issue and won. Local "officials" congratulate me so soundly I wondered if I should bow/curtsey or toss my cookies given their praise. Morons.
My life experiences...thus far...
