If I recall correctly, in January 2007 we had something like 48 hours below freezing here with a low of 20.4F. I'm not looking forward to a couple of days down to 25F later this week, but our forecast highs for the same days are in the upper 40s and lower 50s so things should not be as bad as back then.
I was going to put together a greenhouse for my pitaya last week but decided to postpone it until after my solar project gets completed later this week and the inspector is gone. Wish the timing was different.

And here at least we are expected to have some air movement so the chance of frost is low. It sucks seeing totally brown plants all winter because of one freak frost in so cal.

I'm used to brown banana plants in the winter. Some of my white sapote I've planted/grafted over the past five years have become quite productive and produced very good fruits. They withstood one morning last winter down to 22F with essentially no damage, though I was worried. I'm hoping we don't get anything colder than that. I have 25 varieties now and would hate to lose any of them but I could take some cuttings if I knew a hard freeze is coming.

The way I'm reading the meteorological charts and models, it appears they will have a once-in-fifty-years winter storm in the Pacific Northwest which then careens across Canada and the northern U.S., widening and blasting much of the east coast. For southern California, the typically USDA zone 10 areas are predicted to have lows of only 40F. We'll see what actually happens.
I recall during "the freeze of 2007" I was living 8 miles inland from Del Mar and the ocean was within site of my hillside backyard. There were a few nights that the temperatures flirted below 32F (0 C) just before dawn, but there was one killer night that it hit 32F at 11pm and kept dropping until reaching 27F and sustaining it for 3 hours before dawn. Most of my plants at the time were ok with this. There was some defoliation of tender plants and of course the bananas turned brown within about a week but none of the bananas died. I did lose a Passiflora quadrangularis -- it was toast the morning after with shriveled main stem and total leaf drop. The interesting plant was my "Fredericks" P. edulis cultivar. It had no leaf drop, and maybe a half-dozen leaves had a little burn around the edges. A warm spell followed that freeze, and the Fredericks flowered the next month.

In 07 we had 3 feet of snow that lasted a couple of weeks. When the weather hit last night we had lighting thunder hale mix rain and snow then the temp dropped 12 degrees in a quick drop. when I got up this morning my flowers were all dead and the ground is hard. the good or bad thing is the sun is out but it is still below 40 on the porch. Thank god for frost cloth and heat packs. the bananas are just fine.
IT IS 38F AT 3:30 IN THE AFTERNOON I don't even want to think of what the temp will be tonight. I know it is colder up north but this is just not right in Seattle we are the rainy city not the frozen north.
23 on porch where is the rain I so love this time of year. it would be three feet of snow at these temp's I am going through a lot of hot packs.

It is my first year with 4 fruit bunches hanging right now and I am getting nervous. I do not want to loose the fruits.
harveyc
12-04-2013, 04:45 PM
Yes, though not every one of them fruits every year. If spring is warm they get started early and have a better chance of flowering earlier early enough in the year. In January 2007 when I have 4 plants they all died with 3 of them re-sprouting from the corm. As long as we don't have too many hours of cold weather the pseudostems remain alive and new growth sprouts from the top in the spring. Sometimes they'll get stuck amongst the dried up tips and I need to cut them for new growth to emerge.

Here, north of the 49th on the west coast of Canada, we've been in a cold spell for the last week or so. It's currently 0C (32F) and not expected to get any warmer. By this evening it's expected to hit a low of -5C (23F).
The long range forecast is that the temperatures will continue to drop and by Saturday our daytime high will be -3C (27F) with a low of -7C (19F). But the good news is that we're supposed to slowly warm up to 1C (34F) by Monday with a chance of snow flurries.

First time this winter that the temps dropped below freezing point (30F), but the plants look surprisingly good. 18 banana plants are wrapped in frost cloth, 2 fruit bunches bagged up, some Namwah and some Ice Cream fruits have been harvested and I am debating with myself of harvesting 1 Namwah and one Blue Java bunch or not.Looks like another frosty night ahead of us.

This morning we had a low of 27F but also had about 10 hours below freezing. Ice formed 3/4" thick on a tub of water sitting outside. Banana leaves are already fried. A small amount of the young tips on some of my white sapote are burned back but they look very good overall. I'm not expecting any major issues with these freezes. Last winter we got down to 22F and still did okay. Wish I hadn't uncovered my lychee so soon (I was making room for the utility company to switch the power lines to our new solar system but I learned too late that this won't happen until this Friday.)

The pseudostems have shaken off this cold as if nothing even happened. They are still firm and green underneath the outer sheaths. Even the Pisang Ceylon made it through all of this. The only fatality appears to be one of the Blue Java's newly emerged pups. Given how rare and unusual this kind of cold is here, I'm now thoroughly convinced that my banana plants can survive just about anything the South Bay throws at them. They certainly are really tough plants. :0519:

There are no Santa Anas in Northern California, but at my house in north Los Angeles they're really bad. Here the biggest issue is the cold. I didn't use frost cloth, but I mulched the bases of the plants to protect the meristems.
