Wanting to grow something with really small fruit like you find in the grocery store. I researched and it was called Musa Niņo another member said. It's awesome looking, but very hard to find and people don't grow it because it is so picky with temp flukes.

On Logees website they have LF and DC and both have the same species name for both?

I wanted a short Niņo, too. When I was trying to find it, I came across a thread on Glui Kai/Kluay Kai (http://www.bananas.org/f12/what-glui-kai-7120.html) where Tog Tan says that the GK/KK is the equivalent of Pisang Mas, which I've seen elsewhere equated to Niņo.

The only GK/KK I could find for sale was through FHN. I bought a young tc from there a little over a year ago and so far so good, the plant is almost fully grown and looks just like the pics that Tog Tan posted. It's a slender plant with long narrow leaves (sort of like Gros Michel leaves in that regard) that looks like it'll flower around 7'. Hopefully it'll fruit in the spring and prove to be what it's supposed to be.

Assuming the Lady Finger I'm growing is the same as the Logees one. It is different that my double mahoi, which is basically a dwarf cavendish which may be double bunched. I prefer it and think of it as halfway between a Williams (store type) and a Gros Michel. Better taste, texture, and more fragrant than a Williams, but not quite as delicious as I find the Gros Michel to be. Assuming Nino is the same as Sucrier/Pisang Mas, etc. but shorter, it is also tasty but quite different. Very tiny fruit and small bunches, but I like them.

The Dwarf Lady Finger sold by Logee's appears to be some sort of Cavendish tissue culture sport, according to Gabe (back when he was involved here) and based on the appearance of the one I have from Logee's. It's not identical to Dwarf Cavendish or Super Dwarf Cavendish. It's been a terrible plant for me. Very slow growing and hates cool temperatures. I don't think it is the same thing Rob is growing.

I'll be interested to see if you got the right thing from FHN. I definitely didn't when I ordered that plant from them. The real thing has very distinctive coloration on the p-stem. Post some photos and we'll know if you got the right thing.

Is yours originally from Logees? Mine is definitely a cavendish type. I recall the story was that Logees acquired it as a TC from Hawaii 20+ years ago. Since I acquired mine from the major TC supplier here in Hawaii and kind of put 2 and 2 together and made the assumption that mine is the same as what Logees sells and others have. Have bought fruit here sold as Lady Finger a few times and it was different each time, and never cavendish fruit.

Mine is from Logee's. The only reason why I think yours is different is the size of the plant. The Logee's one is very short when it fruits, from what I've seen (not in my own yard). Maybe 3-5'.

I welcome your input, thanks in advance. The purported GK/KK is front and center (Grand Nain on right). This pic is from mid-July, but it's probably the best I have (I've moved it twice since then, and it is currently leafless and dormant with dry brown husk covering the whole pstem).

Traits I use to distinguish it from my other plants:

-slender p-stem with vibrant lime green coloration
-narrow leaves (maybe half as wide as DC leaves?)

On a separate note, Tog Tan describes/shows the GK/KK fruit as being egg-shaped (hence the name "Kai" which means "egg"), but the Niņos I've seen at grocery stores are skinny, tightly packed fingers that look more like baby Cavendish fruit than like eggs. If Tog Tan's GK/KK is a different variety from Niņo, how closely related do you think they are?

Yours could be the right plant. Certainly it looks more like it than the thing I got from FHN. What yours currently lacks is the chestnut brown marks on the p-stem, which show up well in Rob's photo of a Sucrier variety below. Perhaps yours will get these as it matures.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=50304&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=50304&si=sucrier&what=allfields)

I agree that the Niņos sold as Baby Bananas at the grocery store are not egg shaped like the GK/KK bananas in Tog's photo. I would guess the two are not exactly the same cultivar, but may be closely related.

There are lots of varieties that make small fruit. Mysore (Pisang Klotek), Manzano, Veinte Cohol, Niņo, etc.

You're right that Musa Ornata is inedible, Musa Orito is the edible one with little nanners. Here's a thread on Orito with some nice pics: http://www.bananas.org/f2/musa-orito-8458.html

Looks like another Sucrier variety, probably Pisang Mas, Nino, etc. In other words, just a "baby banana" under another name.

I grow several you listed Venturabananas :) but they are larger then niņo. I guess niņo is a lost cause.

Yes GF that's what I meant haha. I think they are hardy here as a guy told me a customer of his grew then in myrtle beach and are weather is pretty much exact.
