Have my first bananas and still green after months and some cold weather coming. Should I leave them on till they ripen or can I remove them before a freeze and get them to ripen off the tree?

you can get them to ripen off the tree,as long as they are ready to pick.
must be fat and plump and all filled out.plenty of pics on here to get a good ideal as to what I am saying.....hope that helps you...

I am new to growing bananas here in Florida and have some basic questions:
1. I planted about 9 months ago and 6 weeks ago the main shoot bloosomed and I now have some very green fruit growing. How long does it take before the fruit should be harvested (keep in mind it is now November in Florida)?
2. I have been told that the shoot that has borne fruit will die and need to be cutoff when the fruit is harvested. Is that true? It will only bear fruit once?
3. If the answer to number 2 above is yes, what about the other, smaller shoots that have sprung up around the main shoot? Will they need to be cutoff with the main shoot after its fruit is harvested or will they each bear fruit, given time?
4. We will have some cold weather (cold for Florida at least) in two months or so. Will the plants, and any fruit they are bearing, survive a freeze?
Thanks in advance

no the smaller shoots are called pups and you don't cut them off.you can dig them up and plant somewhere else in your yard if you want.or keep them there to grow new plants which will produce new bananas.as far as the cold you will need to cover your plants if you get a freeze.here in Lakeland,fl I have never ever had to do anything to mine, sure sometimes the cold kills the leafs but rarely ever kills the pstem... itself....as for question#1 you sorta have to have a eye for it,but when the bananas get real fat and plump and all filled out in shape, then you can cut them in hang in a warm dry place to ripen..about 75 days here in fl when it's warm and humid, but more like 90-100 days when cooler...I have 2 bunches on tree now,so im like you keeping fingers crossed......hope this helps you......#2.and yes after they bloom and have fruit you will need to whack it down..it will keep growing just will not produce fruit again from that pstem....

I am confused: where do you live? Because the following is what you have posted in the "Very early frost in Texas" thread....
Fellow bananas.org members beware!
Quote:
I live in Texas near Dallas, we had our first 30 degree day last week and last The leaves are still very green and have not begun to change color. The plan is to keep it pruned to about 10 feet tall so that it will be more of a all of our apple and pear trees about every other year in the fall after first frost.
