I wasn't planning on the surgery until at least March or April... On all of my other plants I've waited until the pups were about a foot tall... The mother plants here are just barely above a foot tall...

No seriously, I'm new here and have never even seen a live one.

Well the most basic way to do it if the mother isn't fruiting is to pull the mother out of the pot (or ground which is isn't practical) and knock off much of the dirt so you can do a good Separation.. Last one to show such is Sunfish. Cutting them w/ a sharp shooter/ Digging Bar takes practice. I like to loosen the dirt then cut the pup. When cutting pups its essential you get the whole pup out, without loosing the bottom of the corm (and roots)..
Established mats can be very difficult to cut pups, and some are easy..

theres two different types of pups water suckers and sword suckers sword suckers is 1 foot and for water suckers its 3 feet but sometimes after you pull them u still might have to cut them down to help them grow again it all depends if they have a good root system to be honest
water sucker: has big fat chunky leafs
sword sucker: have sharp thin leafs until it gets bigger

they say you only want the sword suckers but I've propagated both and it seems to work just fine.

Thanks for the info.
Looks like the sword sucker grows a seperate root ball away from the parent.
If I am basically replanting in a raised bed where the elder plant was it's ok to let it grow, removing the water suckers right?
