Hi all

how cold hardy is pisang klotek?

Is namwah and dwarf namwah the same when it comes to cold hardiness?

My PK is fairly cold resistant. The leaves get more exposure cause it's so tall. Current mat has the tallest pstem with tips of new leaves at 20 ft or so. With nothing else to protect it up high they get burned faster when temp drops to low 30's.

Same for tall vs. dwarf Namwah.

How fast or slow do they grow? I have to figure out where to put it since my wife doesn't want any banana plants next to the house except in the back (the east side with only 9 hours of sun in summer) and where the full fury of the Santa Ana winds hit my area and they always seem to hit my area hard..

I have lots of room in the front area but no warmth from any buildings.

This will be the first winter that my DO, MisiLuki, Rajapuri, and my new Namwah will be out in the open.

In the past my DO and RajaPuri have fruited planted next to the house back and front but I only ate the Dwarf Orinoco since gophers got my Rajapuri twice when fruiting,,,I hate those beasts.

My Pisang Klotek was 43" planted on May 18, 2013. measured it today and it was exactly 9' tall. Hope that if it gets over the winter fine, that I will get some fruits next year.

Well the one I got from you (crazy banana) was 24 inches tall where the leaves come out and I planted it 11/11/2013. I am glad I didn't cut the leaves off the namwah cause so far so good only had to cut off two leaves on the bottom that got pulled by my grand kids sitting in the back.

Yours grew fast, must be that fine looking black soil you have it planted in.

I would put another pic but they seem to be too big to post via my phone.

Wait a minute: are you mixing up the Namwah with the PK? The Namwah was the taller one, the PK pup was about 3'.

Haha, I got it now. Was worried that your Grandkids pulled on the leaves of the PK.
But you are right my plants love all the good compost, horse and chicken manure. They grow pretty well for me and as a "banana newbie", I am pretty proud and happy that I got 4 plants to fruit in Year 1.

Pisang Klotek is pretty average in growth rate -- and gets pretty darn tall in my yard: 13'+. So factor that in to where you plant it.
