Hello all, I took over care of a teaching glasshouse at Reading University a couple of years back. After some major soil renewal I now have a dwarf cavendish banana in flower. (http://blogs.reading.ac.uk/tropical-biodiversity/2013/11/tropical-fruit-in-flower-pineapple-and-banana/)How long do these usually take from flower to ripe fruit? We are moving into cold dull weather and even the greenhouse will be in the mid-teens/low twenties celsius until next spring. Advice welcome!

3 months minimum

And probably at least 6 months given the low light levels and cool temperatures.

I can see I'll need to keep a photo diary - there is very little light and the temperatures are now down in the teens inside the greenhouse!

They ripen faster if you put them in a brown paper bag and put them in a dark place. It has something to do with the fruit alcohol ethanol that is produced. For mostly green bananas it takes about 4 days and for slightly ripe it will take 2 days.
