Hello! This weekend was pruning my jungle and noticed white flies in the underside of the lower banana leaves mostly located in the rib. Some research shows an outbreak here in south Florida of this.

Do you have spiraling white fly? I have this insect infestation and this year it is much less severe. Hopefully you will have the same experience.

Yes it is the spiraling white fly.

We have them big time here in Miami, but the bananas on my place seem more like accidental hosts. They don't seem to damage the leaves much for quite a long time. The associated smut is unsightly. I think most of this problem comes from my adjacent ficus hedge and the few coconut palms that are infested. For now I'm mostly ignoring it and cutting off the banana leaves when they are yellowed and drying out.
Spraying helps but is only temporary if your source is not curable.
Good luck!

I seem to have these on a few plants here in the Tampa area. They have not totally infested, but I'm going to have to hit them with something. I don't want them to multiply!

It doesn't do much to the plant, I know that some folks at UF are working on a parasitoid/predator for it.

It is best to nip them in the bud early. They like to migrate to my Guava tree and coconut palm. They are a very nasty critter. I am going to experiment tonight with some neem oil on one leaf and just some soapy water on another.
