Personally, I prefer to stay more tropical with Gingers, elephant ears, Crinum lilies, etc. Some areas: Coleus, firespike. I like having Butterfly plants & other plants of color in pots, so I can move them to change the look or remove if they get to looking rough.

I like my fall cucumbers so that's something I will repeat.. I know the Cayenne Pepper is still a madd bush.. If the soil isn't good I'd augment it or the Banana is going to limit other plants in the long term limiting your bounty whether that be veggies, or flowers, or greenery. I do know my Biggest pineapple got that way between two banana's. :^)

Do you allow the cucumbers to climb your banana plant?

I let my cucumbers do whatever they like, but they haven't decided to climb the banana yet.. :^)

thanks again for the input.
I received this from Jon from webebananas. and thought i would pass it along
--"Don't have any experience with planting within the root zone. I have all sorts of things planted between the mats: citrus, stone fruits, jujube, cherimoya, etc."--
if you are ever in San Diego, a visit out to jon's place is worth the drive, and if you contact him ahead of time through his website, he may have some of his more interesting species of bananas available for very reasonable prices. besides the tremendous help of this forum, he has helped and guided me away from becoming a grim reaper to my own bananas, as I go through the learning curve.
