Welcome and good luck! I am sure you will find a nice variety of banana to compliment your other fruit trees. What do you have growing?

I Merce! I don't know nothing about bananas... i'd like a sedless, sweet and hardy variety... maby it doesn't exist. I'm growing annona cherimoya, 3 avocado var, 2 persimmon var, black and white sapote, apples, pears, grapes, several plums, white and red strawberrys, 2 feijoas, oranjes, 2 lychees, macadamia, almonds, hazelnuts, 2 mango var, 2 loquaqs, pitanga, etc... Thank Luis

Luis, if you can grow cherimoya, you can grow most bananas. What part of Portugal are you from?
By the way, I'm from California but my father's parents immigrated from Madeira about 100 years ago. My visit to Madeira in 2004 got me interested in growing bananas.

In central Portugal, very near Fátima. Our min. temp. we get is -3C. Thank's!

I was in Fatima for a couple of days in late October 2004 before attending a chestnut convention in Chaves up north. Temperatures were mild during my visit but I imagine you get quite warm in the summer there. With -3C leaves will probably turn brown during the winter if you have many days with frost but they will essentially just go dormant for a while until spring and then continue growing. Some varieties are less tolerant of cold weather (Ae Ae, for instance) but most varieties should do okay. I have had -7C which killed the plants down to the ground but in -5C most varieties resumed growing from the tops again in the spring. Most winters reach about -2C here and the leaves die back and plants resume growing in March. Namwah would probably be a good choice if you can find it.

Hi Harveyc! It's good to know you were here! This Namwah var. is sedless or sweet? Thank you very much! :bananas_b

nice variety! I am still a banana rookie, but I am sure there are varieties that will meet your needs in 9/10. I have seen some huge bunches, but I guess it all depends on the environment and how well you manage them.

Luis, Dwarf Namwah and Namwah are both seedless varieties.
Nice collection of trees you have there. I think you need more figs, there are many great varieties there to pick from.
