My price per pup is $5 or less even if the owner says they know what they have. Yeah, right. I've budgeted $30 for this venture and have contacted 2 advertisers; haven't heard back yet. 1 supposedly knows what he's growing; we'll see. He does have bananas on site which means I can take pictures. I have a feeling they're all Orinicos (can get that free), Namwahs (have a dwarf) or DCs (have 1 with 5 pups) but who knows?

You will regret it.

You will regret it.Probably. And $30 is my top limit; getting a penny out of me is tough. But I'm itching for plants and Walmart only sells DCs...

So far i picked up from the Walmarts around the Jax area 2 African Rhino horn & i scored 1 Goldfinger ..for about $7 .. thats what they where labeled , but we will see once they fruit..

Not big on CL for fruit trees , your better off getting them from the Forum members..

Good luck Ed...

What is CL? There are several people on here who have legitimate nurseries and are involved on the bulletin board.

Good luck Ed...Not my local Walmarts which have "banana trees" for sale at $7 with no other description. (They look like DCs to me.) I'm hoping this one guy who is actually raising bananas, states that it takes 2 years to get fruit, has some fingers to show and claims to have several varieties might actually have something different than the typical CL offering where they just say "I have banana plants for sale--$25 each--you dig. They taste good."

Yes, I know there are people with legitimate nurseries; I am not in a place just now to do more than play a little. Soon I hope to have space to get serious. Until then I get a lot of donations from gardeners and putter around with propagation to keep me occupied. Who knew you could root lemon grass in water? I didn't. I do now.

I can PM you a list of what I have available and for a reasonable price I can send a sucker. I even have pictures of the plants fruiting. I hadn't thought of advertising on Craigslist...I'll bet the nutjobs would light my phone up.

(Heck, I would love to tour your plantation and meet you!)

CL works pretty good. Use their e-mail option for replies and only respond to those who seem serious. If you have good pictures and can support what you're selling, you can make money selling spares there. (You could probably sell fruit, also.)

Not all buyers are flakes though we do like a bargain. (For me a bargain is knowing what I'm buying and the price is less than a pup/plant with shipping.)

Don't lead people on! A few months ago I exchanged 10+ e-mails with a local woman selling unknowns who kept telling me she wouldn't give me her address even after she had my phone number and address! I finally gave up. I have a feeling her yard is now filled with pups...

Ed.Hands clasped over ears, eyes squeezed tight and lalalalaing loudly. I am not ready to collect plants just yet! I have managed to get a lot of greenery by default thus far but my hands are over my ears, eyes squeezed tight and... ;)

Why do people in GA advertise in Jacksonville? Heard back from the guy with the potentially "best stuff" but he's miles away. If I still had my Geo 2 seater, I might bite but this S-10 piece of trash I own now sucks gas. My quest for $5 "mysteries" isn't looking good. Oh, well...I really don't need plants...I just want.

For $30 you probably get 3 bananas and you don't need to drive anywhere. They're small but grow fast

WELLSPRING GARDENS (http://www.wellspringgardens.org/servlet/StoreFront)I've been shopping for some time--had my cart full there and a few other places. (Just now I have a cart full of day neutral strawberries on sale--just can't commit given limited space so haven't sent the card off yet---may still.)

Maybe explaining me will help. Female who hates shopping clothes; I wear make up only when I want to confuse peeps who think they know me. NOT! I'm a grocery freak. Costa Rica, Virgin Islands and any US state I visit. Love bulk foods like I found in Ohio (Amish country). Have a killer sourdough starter I developed that's traveled with me--a lot. She rocks!

Not trying to reinvent the wheel--just enjoying the ride. If and when I get serious about bananas or anything horticultural again, I'll be more careful. Until then?
Je vais laisser la vie suivre et vivre avec les conséquences. Or something like that.

I'm excited! Just got off the phone with a very nice man who's been raising bananas for over 20 years. More than 1 variety? Not sure and he has no clue what they are so I asked "How do they taste?"

"Like a banana."

Yeah, they're edible! ;)

He said the fruit is about 6" long and fat. Unlike my crazy DC, these produce only 2 or so pups annually. They're really tall; some of the "trunks" are as big around as a tree. He's a bit north of me; he does nothing to protect them in winter.

I'm sold.

I'm taking $10 with me Saturday and bringing home 2 huge ones. I suspect they're Orinocos (or maybe South Florida's "Cuban Bananas") which I can find elsewhere. Main purpose of this outing? Learning how to garden in this nutty place. He has 1/2 acre under cultivation, grows veggies, etc. successfully without "bad" pesticides (neem oil or other like it, yes), has many producing fruit trees, etc. and loves teaching people how to grow their own!

growing bananas for 20yrs and doesn't know the variety ? Produces 2 pups a year ? How big around is a tree :)Someone gave him a pup 20 years ago and now he has, in his words, "a banana plantation". Unless he has to cancel (his work makes that possible), I'll take pictures Saturday which I will post (plants in fruit, etc.). If any are ripe, I'll taste one and report my findings. And I'll take my tape measure so describing a P-stem as the size of a "tree" will herewith be known and never disputed on the forum. ;)
