Howdy new friends!
I have my first banana plant sitting in a tiny pot on my stairs awaiting transplant to a larger pot. I welcome suggestions on what soil to use for patio container gardening my little nanner plant.

The marker on my plant says it is an ORINOCO or something like that. I think that's a dwarf variety?

I want my banana plant to get plenty of moisture without getting root rot....so, I am torn between using a water retaining medium such as sphagnum moss and a draining soil such as a sandy cactus mix. I don't want to waste water but I want proper drainage.

What should I do with my little baby plant first?

By the way, I live in San Diego area where we NEVER get rain and it will most likely never freeze.

Hello, Welcome & Happy Growing.. Nothing wrong w/ Orinoco.. If you plant it in the ground there it should do well if properly taken care of.. and maybe if you don't.. :^)

That type grows corm @ a very fast rate, and it can be potted in the short -term.. :^)

You can grow it in a pot if you wish but it will do better in the ground. You can use peat moss and perlite for your soil mix.Make sure you have drainage holes in the pot.
