View Full Version : Might get kinda cold 1st time greenhouse temp test

So I'm getting mixed results from different weather stations and it has been getting cold (40˚ish at night) and my nanas in my greenhouse are showing no stress so far! They are obviously slowing down and unrolling slower.
Either 10/25 or 10/26 it might get as low as 29˚.....But am gonna be ready. I got this the same time I decided to grow vegetables year around. . . or at least try. . . tomatoes and lettuce doing great.

It usually stays around 50-60 this time of year in N.C. I'm glad I don't live in the mountains, they are already seeing snow!
But I have heaters for the pond/pool thingy and might fill up a barrel.
The Christmas lights are not beening kept on all night yet...
Any comment/suggestions are welcome. . . I'm not very interested in hooking up a 1500watt heater. I have no idea how to keep the roots warmer besides investing in heat mats and I'm up for other simple ideas? Maybe I'll put some dryed leaves under the pots? . . . I don't want to attract bad insects.

I'd put a Digital Temp sensor out there you can monitor from the House.. I'd put it a foot from the ground so you know your lowest temps in there.. :^)

4x4 treated posts painted white but you can see I used red bricks on two sides. This Palram greenhouse is very sturdy and I simply screwed it down to the posts. . . Post were my idea to add a little extra headroom but there was already plenty.
The really great thing about this greenhouse is that I have all polycarbonate panels double-sided taped up- no air leaks and I didn't need to drill a single hole anywhere.

I'm in the foothills of the NC. built my own greenhouse last year. some nights temperature went as low as 34 degrees, not too often though. all my nanners survived. they looked pretty sad by the end the winter, but they are alive. good luck with your plants!

I used some Coleman catalytic heaters outdoors last winter and they worked great. I have no idea whether there is enough oxygen exchange to keep it going for long periods in a greenhouse. It would help if you are goofy like me to get up at 3 or 4 am to light them or whatever time its getting near freezing. They can run up to 14 hours on one can of propane.
Good luck

Hi Justin,
I looked at those but there were a lot of negative adds about the lack of stability. One contributer gave it high ratings but only after he sealed every panel with silicone and added numerous crossbracings. Is this from HD? HF had something similiar but at half the cost. I planning on building a larger one but this could fit the need untill then.

Yup, my other post: Palram snap and grow from HD (http://www.bananas.org/f2/everythings-ready-winter-19088.html#post230208)
Ha and as for stability there is plenty of support! I have no doubt it would hold 2" of snow but I would never let it get that high and unlikely. I price beat it with walmart at the time.

i keeping the roots warm...set up some tables with a 3 or 4 inch depth and run some PVC tube back and forth..like a radiator. get a small boiler and run hot water through the pipes. cover them up with soil and sit your pots on them. Keeps the roots warm and happy all winter

Did you buy the automatic vent openers?
No I hear many become faulty an are a $waste. I leave my vents shut the past week and it has Not got too hot or too cold. I have left 1 vent cracked ever since I put the greenhouse together and temp has stayed fine for plants. . . but little too warm for me.
I have thermometers stating 70˚ in the soil 60˚ inside greenhouse and 51˚ outside as of 8pm 10/24. . . Sure it will get colder but still there may be no need for radiant floor heat. But ima DIY'er so you'll see what happens.

At Night the Lowest I have seen the temp was 27 outside, 39 in the soil and 43 in the green house. I may have stayed at those temps for about 3-6 hours.

OKAY THANK YOU ALL! I have received a lot of great ideas and +FB. I plan to create my own "heat mat". or maybe just a unpredictable hand grenade?
I have got 60 ft. Roof De-Icing Cable off ebay for $35. (Member messaged idea, not mine ;) )
Left over project stuff: 20"x10' sheet metal. 24"x15'x2"thick insulation, 4x8 treated plywood board, plastic, and a scrap parts warehouse lol.
NC will get colder soon so I'm gonna try to get to this project before the weekend.

Okay so after I got off work today I plug up the De- Icing wire and waited a couple hours and prepped the area I needed for my Heat Mat. After waiting long enough...I found the wire heated very unevenly but not too hot anywhere.

It's not cold yet I'm just testing it AND WATCHIN' MY CAMERAS FOR A FIRE! LOL yeah I know this voids the manufacturers warranty.
Apparently my post didn't happen. Have you considered adding some containers filled with water to capture sun hour heat and then release at night? Darker and bigger ones are better but empty milk jugs are easily located and cost nothing but some space.
ETA: Hot manure on the ground works very well but if that's part of your living space it can be a little stinky.

Did my best to find the average temps.(stuck soil many times in different spots). I have Tried to Space-out my wire to create more room for my plants BUT it seemed to really loose most all heat made....I won't upload pictures of the actual de-icing wire, as my first pictures shows my arrangement very well.
Mission successful so-far! Leafage is lookin' good no rot ;) lol

Keeping the temperature around 80ish and humidity at 50-60% will allow the plant's to grow and increase your chances of success. I am not an expert and would recommend taking the time to research/Google the subject. Maybe there are other members that would like to share their experience.

The humidity always seems to get higher at night, but yeah no more than 80 Fahrenheit? Maybe even a big plastic bag propped over the top of the lights to trap %&temp?

This morning 11/13 frost/ice on the ground! It won't stay this cold for too long. Snow did Not stick. I hope once I have establish mats next year to bring at least 2 pups of each in my GH. And leave some corms in the ground to compare their hardiness and see which, out of all these, comes back to life first. I always have a plan... not all good but yea I got those LEDs in the pond OFF EBAY from Hong Kong $7. Hmmmmm ferns, that's new to me I'll think about it today.

Nah the CFL and smd lights don't give off more than 95°( I can hold the bulbs in my hand/no burn). I actually moved the lights closer.... about 4" away now. The humidity goes up high at night!!!... Even though I never water them at night, only mornings (haven't watered in over a week, it's cold), and the pond's air-stone bubblers are turned off at night too. Humidity is usually around 80-99% at night for some reason I have not understood yet.

Ashamed to post bad news, I suppose I will post this for my future reference and your curiosity. Got down abnormally low to 24° last night. (recorded at my house)
Snow didn't stick. Greenhouse recorded 38°
LOST LEAVES= turned soft and draping/drooping over
Dwarf Red 1 upper next new leaf fine
Gold finger 1 lower
Raja Puri 3 middle
Williams 4 upper
ALL others fine
Basjoo wasn't on heat mat= ^%$&(*^ Haha you wanna see a picture!?
Manzano not looking good= staying in center of heat mat; will loose all leaves/probably and start over.
Elephant Ears kinda messed up too
Heat mat timer had an extra couple hours (on 6pm off 10am) now 5pm-11am 11-13
Added a damn 1500w heater on a separate timer.
I have never given up ;) ALL should be okay and have no problem making it to next year.

I feel your pain on the cold snap. Forecast here called for a low of 6F Saturday night, with some other nights in the teens.
I was in the greenhouse when the sun went down Saturday, and I've gotta say, it was pretty interesting watching the ceiling quickly freeze. Took maybe 10 minutes to go from wet to frozen and frosty. Air temp got down to a low of about 40F inside. Cavendishes are yellowing, but the Dwarf Namwah and Raja Puri are still all green and are trying to push out buds.

Propane patio heaters produce carbon monoxide please be careful. Maybe you should buy a carbon monoxide detector.
• CARBON MONOXIDE HAZARD
• This heater is a combustion appliance. All combustion appliances produce carbon monoxide (CO) during the combustion process. This product is designed to produce extremely minute, non-hazardous amounts of CO if used and maintained in accordance with all warnings and instructions. Do not block air flow into or out of the heater.
• Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning produces flu-like symptoms, watery eyes, headaches, dizziness, fatigue and possibly death. You can't see it and you can't smell it. It's an invisible killer. If these symptoms are present during operation of this product get fresh air immediately!
• For outdoor use only .
• Never use inside house, or other unventilated or enclosed areas.
• This heater consumes air (oxygen). Do not use in unventilated or enclosed areas to avoid endangering your life.

This is true, don't close the door behind you and stay inside for long periods of time while the heater is turned on. Carbon Monoxide (CO) in concentrations as low as 700ppm can be life-threatening and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is less dangerous but at 80,000ppm (8%) Carbon Dioxide can kill you.

I've thought a lot about this, and I've got a cool solution, but I'm concerned about the legality of offering advice, especially if you were to have an accident.
I think I'm alright so long as I just tell you what I would do, but even so I want to beg you to please be safe! I recommend getting professional safety advice, and I must strongly stress that I am not advising you and am merely saying what I would do/have done.
________________________________________________________________ ___________
Here's what I'd do:
Use 2 of the cheap $13 wading pools (5' diameter). Set them up side by side (just a few inches apart) on a leveled surface. Connect the wading pools with two separate 1" tubes by cutting two 1" holes, side by side, into each wading pool about 80% of the way to the top (make holes large enough for tubing but small enough to hold it snugly). One of these will carry water from pool1 to pool2, the other will return it. This circulation will be constant and will be powered by mere air.
The first tube should be shaped like a horizontal capital L, like this:
**|***|**
*
Those vertical bars in the diagram represent the edges of the wading pools (the 3 asterisks in the middle are between the pools). The 'downturn' on the far left is because you're creating an airlift: you'll run your bubbler's air hose into the bottom of that 'L' leg, where the air will rise, pushing some of pool1's water up and across the tube into pool2. When that happens, the rising water level in pool2 will instantly cause an equal amount of water to be pushed through the 2nd tube (a.k.a. the 'return tube') back into pool1, thereby creating a constant cycle powered entirely by your aerator. The 2nd tube can be totally horizontal (no need for the laying down L shape because no need to create a 2nd airlift) and would look like this:
**|***|**
I would take all the tropical plants and put them into pool2. I'd buy a $35 Allied 1000W bucket heater (https://www.google.com/search?q=1000W+bucket+heater&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=rcs#channel=rcs&q=allied+1000W+bucket+heater&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial) and safely secure it in pool1 (after they're both filled with water). To keep the pots from flooding, put them in individual waterproof plastic trash bags before setting them into the pool. I'd want the water to cover as much of the side area of the pots as possible.
I'd then set up a short plastic tent (much like you did) over these pools. Covered at night, uncovered during day (don't want to cook them, plus want them to get full light).
I would turn the bucket heater on at night and turn it off during the day, which should allow me to keep the water around 80F all the time. That 80F water would keep the roots of the potted plants at almost 80F all the time. The hottest water molecules would evaporate off the tubs as a nice warm steam that would rise up, enveloping the stems and leaves of the plants. The tent would create a sauna effect by trapping the steam.
Why 2 pools? First, I've done something like this before, and I think the bucket heater would heat up 1 pool too much if left on overnight (especially in a cramped pool with little water since the pots have displaced most of it). You could solve that by using a timer to cycle the heater on and off throughout the night, or you could add enough extra water mass that the heater just can't manage to overheat it in a night of constant use. IMO that would require 2 of these 5' wading pools (might turn out to be 3 in your environment, but I'd start with 2). Second, you may have enough plants that they won't all fit in just one pool, and may need to set some in pool1 as well as pool2.
Note that these bucket heaters are not designed for this purpose. When used long-term (weeks straight), they'll accumulate lime deposits. If those deposits are not regularly cleaned (by chiseling or dissolving in some sort of lime-away solution), the heating element can and will overheat and rupture, thereby releasing electric current directly into the water. That's extremely hazardous and has happened to me 3 times (mainly because I did a poor job of maintenance). Twice I noticed because the fish got stunned; once I got zapped myself. I would not recommend zapping oneself!!
I'd take the patio heater back for a refund and take the air heaters out.
With this method, the plants should be able to not just survive, but flourish all winter long :)

There was an article I've read were they have used basically the same technique the only difference is no tubing they used a 500 Watt aquarium heater (http://www.amazon.com/Catalina-Titanium-Heater-500-Watt/dp/B000PNCFK0/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_5) and a power head (submersible pump) (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=20325406&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo) for water circulation.

Nice, a 500W heater would probably allow for pool2 to be eliminated, since the heater may not overheat the water.
I'd then use the aerator to create circulation within the one pool; using multiple bubble stones should be good enough.

Last night my greenhouse got down to 23.8F while the outdoor temperature was 10.1F, and I usually don't heat it at all. I do however grow strictly temperate plants, mostly bamboos in there so I don't turn on my paraffin lamps unless it can get below 14F in there. Last year, I never had to turn on any heat. I don't have that many bananas so I store them right in the attic which never gets below 40F.
One thing I like about my unheated greenhouse is the a majority of the time, the temperatures get stuck in the 32-55F range which is fairly idea for vernalization which usually gets them taking off much quicker in the spring.
Here are some pictures of it.

You should really think about adding bubble wrap to the walls. It really helps with insulation. You still get good light transmission and the heat from the sun during the day. One of your issues is heat is being lost so quickly on freezing nights, your heaters cant keep up. The bubble side faces the greenhouse plastic creating airspace between 2 layers of plastic. You want the largest bubble size for maximum effect. Here is what it looks like installed.
<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img20/7721/ux90.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/><br/>
Also heating pads to warm the roots are a good idea, My temperature drops to 40F but the heating pads come on below 60F, this allows just the roots of the bananas to remain warm while the ambient temperature inside is much lower. My greenhouse has gotten to 38F while I have observed no damage and they are continuing to push out new healthy leaves. The one on the left raja puri, is epically vigorous and pushing out a new leaf(slower, but still growing and healthy)

Ryan,
It looks like your greenhouse matches just about the same design as my 20X10X10 greenhouse eh. You just use a different kind of bubble wrap. I've thought about adding the clear bubble wrap for the south side as well, but seeing how the temperatures never dipped under 23F when it was 7F outside with no heating at all.
Something as weak as a candle or perhaps a kerosene/paraffin lamp would bring it close to the freezing mark just because the heat stays around inside the greenhouse with good insulation.
Shelterlogic greenhouses don't have very good light transmission, but that doesn't matter that much during the winter where potential photosynthesis is minimal, but the insulation ability is good.

So If I can't find enough bubble wrap I have already used some 5 mil plastic to conserve heat at night. . . But I'm still collecting lots of ideas and testing new stuff out. Also not trying to burn up the grid I'm going to keep my power consumption restricted to a single 20 amp outlet. I think I'm going aquaponics.

....Allied 1000W bucket heater......evaporate off the tubs as a nice warm steam that would rise up, enveloping the stems and leaves of the plants... refund and take the air heaters out.....all winter long :)
Very good Idea!
I read an understood every word. I'm a person that collects very many ideas and assemble them together as I deem appropriate.
So yea I got it to stay 49/50°F, with a night low of 34°F!
Success so far..... Tooo many timers: Fans, heat wire, 300w water heating element, 700 watt air heater, christmas/pond lights, water pump, air stone pump, T-8s. . . I'm sure I missed something.
I'm thinkin'bout upgrading to 500w water heater. . . mine might be working a little too hard. My 300w should work up to 80 gal.... 4' pools "I think are about 40 gallons each."
I got that propane heater for my own personal use and am NOT intending to ever have to use indoors. Shiny new heater inside greenhouse=Eye-candy&storage.
Edit: I can't walk into GH w/ glasses on, the steam/humidity fogs 'em right up immediately!

Ive learned a few things about my greenhouse in the past 2 winters. I have benches waist high with space underneath for storage. I place all my dormant bulbs and low light plants underneath the benches. However, cold sensitive bulbs may get too cold being on the ground. My greenhouse is of similar size as yours. I use a quartz heater set to 60 F. Normally this heater works fine alone, but on really long cold spells a second heater set to activate at 40 F on the opposite side of the greenhouse reduces freezing chances. I usually line my banana's in pots in the center of the greenhouse such that the heaters blow heat down their row.

Impressed myself once again ;) . . . Was very scared of what I might find but itz all good. LOWest it got was 50 indoors. . . This aquaponic table thingy has increased my chances tenfold!

I got some more sprouting, I been eating out of that lettuce planter for about a month. Yummy yummy
Edit: interesting seems Epsom salt will effect production of lettuce too, as I only have used for tomatoes and peppers before. I'll try not to forget next time but nah that lettuce is about done in the pic.

I'm not getting tired of this surprisingly. . . feels like 99% humidity in there but only stated 67% I'm not letting much water get to the roots, they still seem to be slowed with the night chill. Namwah is a keeper for sure, it'll probably poop a pup first is my guess, it's doing betterest!

Here's the outdoor temperature at 15.3F against the unheated greenhouse temperature at 24.3F. With this big of a differential, it will need to get very cold to be a threat to the temperate bamboos inside.

thinking happy thoughts GGRRrrAHHHH! :)
ALL others plants fine/no problems.
I feel better about not fighting to tent my DC; it got much colder outside here. Her leaves are now brown and even her pups that I did protect felt the effect of what appears to have been 26 degrees for more than a 5 hours, not much of a warm up today and now another night of 32 for at least an hour or so. (My newer potted pups ganged with potted tomatoes, peppers, etc. appear to be fine under a tarp.)
It's possible I lost half her P-stem--could be all. Fine. Corn is good I know; ground did not come close to freezing. I now live where I should be able to grow bananas without a greenhouse under normal winter temps. These weren't. If she pulls through, I'll dance; if she doesn't, I'll chalk it up to learning a new zone and knowing that the odds of this much cold air all at once won't happen again very soon. I'm probably more philosophical because I had figs die to the ground and come back though their only protection was deep mulch.
Weather happens. I'm sorry it happened to you and to all of us this year.
BTW, the damage doesn't look that bad to me: just leaves that will probably be replaced when it warms up.

I took another look at your VC and that may be toast; didn't see your RIC. Fingers crossed both have enough corm to rise again--don't give up until you must. Late summer/early fall I had 2 pups rotting but, because of reading here and asking questions, took the plunge and cut them off; they're doing fine. Obviously they both had sufficient corms.
Next time it's this cold (better not be in my lifetime), cover your plants with sheets. Did that up north to extend the season. Not fancy but does help for about 10 degrees. They're not heavy and don't add much. Clear plastic over them adds more "keep the plant heat in" IME.

It has gotten down to almost 0F inside my greenhouse, no heater used however the outdoor temperature has dipped as low as -9F.
Most of the stuff in the greenhouse still looks lively, and my greenhouse is a similar size to yours.
Even though daytime highs have barely gotten over 20F lately, the greenhouse is still breaking 50F on most days due to the stronger sun lately. Even when lows get down around 0F, it still lingers in the upper teens so the climate has clearly been changed inside the greenhouse. I do keep water barrels, plastic on the greenhouse floor and compost all throughout the greenhouse which gives off CO2 and provides heat. Elevated CO2 concentrations should help increase photosynthesis of the plants inside the greenhouse.
Here's the inside.
http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz246/stevelau1911/DSC09931_zps19539085.jpg
Barrels should be completely melted in another week. They have about 50% ice now.

It has been an awful winter weather wise but the increasing sun declination is working against the cold. Today the sun declination at solar noon is - 4.33 and tomorrow -3.93 and before you know it will be 0.01 on March 20 solar noon and continued increasing until summer solstice. It is all down hill for old man winter and cold from here.

With the addition of a small electric heater I have managed to keep most of my bananas happy, while on a few nights the temp dropped to 32f which ultimately killed off a couple of CVs and really beat up my ensete glaucums. The ensete Maurellis are thriving as are the SDCs. Incredibly the Zebrina grown from seed almost in full on spring mode and requires fertilizer every week.
