I've had a pineapple growing for over a year and it's still a little bit of nothing. I think I have the wrong soil, it's not draining very fast and stays wet for days. I'm thinking about replanting it in some orchid type soil but I'm not sure if that would shock it too bad and kill it, especially this time of year. Any thoughts from anyone?

They don't need a massive pot, but they like to be fed like the banana's when its growing season.. :^)
Abnshrek is right--mine are in 2-3 gallon size pots--I just add a small handfull of 10-10-10 every couple weeks in the summer. Mine are not even in full sun.

I observed some of those funny looking centers another person's pineapple plants last week and asked if they were blooms. "I'm not sure". I was pretty certain they were and now know I was right. If I ever see those on my poor specimen, I'll jump for joy!

My Super Market Tops are Monster plants compared to the one's flowering. I believe the healthier the plant the better fruit your going to get.. That's why I'm not inducing them to fruit, but the thought has crossed my mind.. :^)

Nice! I just spotted a bloom in my variegated pineapple.... Has anyone found those to be edible? I read somewhere that they are really tart, but I was wonderkng if I left it on for a while maybe it would sweeten up a little... Nonetheless, I love the looks of it and it will he good to have another top and some suckers

If it looks like this? It says it has some edibility (http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fp041) and other information on the plant, but is mostly ornamental, since the fruit is small.. :^)

Lookin' good! I'm jealous of the size of your plants. I got my first one to flower this year, and expect several next year, after that I should be rolling in the things. I work at a grocery store and we prepare cut fruit in house, so I often take home boxes full of tops. I've got over 100 strewn about the yard :).
If you ever want that many, I recommend you ask your local produce department to save them for you.

Curious to know if anyone has found it to be true that suckers and/or slips mature and flower faster than the tops? I've heard properly planted suckers can bear fruit in as "little" as 18 months.

Looks like one of my 3 tops I'm growing.. Doesn't look like smooth cayenne that's for sure.. It has major claws/saws if you get near it..
I think Pineapples are enjoyable to grow, and limited risk for a fruiting plant. I killed one when my heater broke, but the pup larger than the rotted one is doing just fine.. I have a crap-load of smooth cayenne pups to separate from one fruiting mother..
Another good thing about pineapple vs banana's when unknown.. Pineapples (http://www.kingoffruit.com.au/pineapple-fact-sheet.html) are limited in what it can be versus banana's.. Good thing most pineapples are edible.. :^)

So I was looking thru the selection of tops, and saw many had the centers pulled out, being Chiquita they had the tag shot thru the center as well.. Yes, it's still white but will turn green once those leaves get bigger.. No April Fools Joke..
So the center can be pulled out or rotted out and given the right circumstance can regrow from center.. I know I had one do that previously.. :^)

Out of curiosity.
I've got a couple in smaller pots that are between 8 months and 3 years old.
Ideally, I'd like to see one or both flower this year.
What would be a good (reasonable) sized pot to facilitate this advancement?

It's not the size of the pot, but more what you feed it, and that it gets full sun.. I fed mine Banana Fuel last summer and the summer previous.. Azomite helps them pup, just like Banana's if they are of reasonable size already. I make no special accommodations for pineapples, they are low maint, and don't need a monster reservoir like banana's.. I believe one of the one's I have fruiting now is in like a 2-3 gal pot.. If I put them in a bigger pot its so they don't tip over from wind and have good side support from the pot itself.. The last reason to have a bigger pot for a cayenne or one that has barbs which cut and you have less to reach around when moving them.. Regular pineapple tops I have acquired don't have saw teeth on the leaves.. :^)

Here is the Bottom.. The Chiquita Tagging Gun leaves a nice bruise as you can see above the roots and a hole. The Center in the pic above is very attached to the top or I wouldn't gotten this one. I always make sure my top has some roots other than the fruit itself being in good shape. :^)

Currently they're both in 1/2 gallon(?) ~8" pots. The older one, when it was repotted last summer, had almost no roots at all?!? I haven't messed with the younger sibling since initial planting, but they've both grown since. Also, the younger one is easily twice the size of the other with a tip to tip leaf measure across the crown of about 18" or so. (curved leaves, not straight out)
I think I'll go ahead and upgrade them with some better soil, larger pots, and more sun. I hope they'll double again this summer.

Best soil is cheap bagged top soil as they grow best in sandy soil don't put too much organic matter .... and nematodes are the main problem, at least here in FL Ideally they are 18 month plants in a tropical setting ... basically high nitrogen fert first 9 months and a balanced fert after that . The cooler weather is what tells them to bloom if the plants are big enough.
good luck

Unfortunately I don't have a pic of the better tree, which was a bit more full. On this one there is a significant amount of space between leaves and fruit so they don't look as much like pineapples but still pretty neat. Anyone know what it is?

Best soil is cheap bagged top soil as they grow best in sandy soil don't put too much organic matter .... and nematodes are the main problem, at least here in FL Ideally they are 18 month plants in a tropical setting ... basically high nitrogen fert first 9 months and a balanced fert after that . The cooler weather is what tells them to bloom if the plants are big enough.
good luck
I will have to by sandy soil to add to my crappy clay soil. I swear no matter how much we mulch and add soil the clay comes to the top. So now out of the ground and into pots.
I will have to by sandy soil to add to my crappy clay soil. I swear no matter how much we mulch and add soil the clay comes to the top. So now out of the ground and into pots. And here in FL no matter how much compost you add, the sand rises. Pineapples seems to do fine in the mess; most plants stay puny and don't grow well for many folks.
I remember clay--white throwable stuff. I amended annually with truckloads of leaf mould/mulch which was never stirred or shaken for more than 10 years before I could step down to a biennial program for the most part. After over 25 years, I had 20" of black gold! I suspect the same could happen here but everyone tells me I'm wrong. These are the same people who tell me FL has 2 distinct growing seasons requiring "cool" and "warm" plants but they plant kale, cabbage and broccoli seeds in March that just get going by June when it's beginning to get hotter than Hades--HELLO?

thanks a lot.. yeah, i planted the bottom one last year but i don't know what variety it is. the fruit sure is puny though. hopefully it will beef up a little before it's time to harvest.
oh, and the variegated is definitely a freak! i've never had this many suckers on a single plant. i really have no idea how i'm going to separate them with all of the spines, but a bunch of my neighbors have already asked me for starts.
good luck with yours--they are awesome to look at.

Hey, neighbor that sure is pretty you have spare? lol heard that before..
I fed mine the same as I fed my banana's and the plants got pretty big last year.. I don't think cayenne cares how big it is it pops when it feels like it, but Pineapple tops like being bigger, how big who knows.. Hopefully one of my 3 flower so I can get a general size indicator.. :^)

no, i have yet to use azomite but want to give it a try on my bananas. didn't know i could use it on my pineapples too. maybe the variegated pineapples just pup more (thinking about that picture you posted a couple of weeks back). i am going to need a set of surgical knives to salvage all of the pups... i want them all!! :)

The Pups are easily separated, even saw tooth cayenne come apart like its nothing to it.. just loosen the soil so the roots come out w/ the pups.. They separate easily from the mother w/ a gentle tug.. :^)

I'd say most you need is a Tablespoon for anything, and 1/2 teaspoon for Pineapples. Did you get the Micronized? Either way I mix it in water and apply, the granules just take longer to sit in water before they dissolve..

My research disagrees with your statement: Top-bottom Sugarloaf, Walmart, Cayenne. My serrated blades are much more pronounced in Sugarloaf and Cayenne than w/e walmart grocery sold meee. While the Sugarloaf is the only with a bit of red.

Smooth Cayenne has been the dominate variety in worldwide pineapple production since the start of Pineapple production, due to many factors including, high yield, adaptability, good canning characteristics , and ease of picking the fruit , due to it's spineless nature.

All three of those plants are relatively smooth compared to a variety with serrated edges like a Natal Queen. The smooth in Smooth Cayenne does not mean perfectly smooth without even a couple thorns, it's a comparative description of a variety with many variations, such as ( CO-2, MD-2, Sarawak, Champaka etc...). Due to breeding, cross pollination, and other factors, a Smooth Cayenne variety could have zero to several serrations on the leaf edges. But generally speaking, it would be smooth compared to just about any other variety.
