yes you can take a cherry tomato put it in the center of the plant and it will make it fruit,im sure you could use just a piece of tomato, but I have always used a cherry tomato....it works everytime!...

They need to be sufficient size and some colder temps to begin the fruiting process. The apple tomato thing will work better once this happens Does any one Know How to get pineapple to flower?

I've also read that if you are using the apple trick it helps to cover the whole plant over night with a plastic bag to keep the ethylene gas concentrated.

How long is a long time? You can expect 2 years from planting as a minimum before flowering/fruiting. Could be longer under less favorable conditions. Second fruiting is shorter, again depends on conditions. A piece of apple placed in the center is said to speed up flowering (old wive's tale?). We never tried it ourselves. Patience is the best answer.

You can use Calcium Carbide (in the old days); Ethrel or Ethephon.

I'm fairly familiar with the 1st 2 of this list.

Ethrel is also used in controlled ripening of bananas.

I harvested my 1st home grown pineapple this summer - grown from a store bought pineapple top. It took 3 years- lots of moves inside and outside. I was about to throw it out when I noticed a small flower starting in the center - The fruit developed relatively quickly once it started.
Good luck

Went out to look @ one of my Pineapples.. and this guy isn't helping it fruit.. :^)Apparently they don't help. I found one in the center of mine which still hasn't bloomed; it's much too young. What stunned me was that he was still chartreuse like your friend.

My homegrown pineapple took about 3 years to fruit. It was started from a top I brought home from the store. I started it in water and when it had lots of roots I planted it in a pot on my front porch. :goteam:
