View Full Version : Pisang Klotek Contest!

Would you like to win a rare banana plant?
Mitchel (momoese (http://www.bananas.org/member.php?u=42)) would like to pass along a very nice Pisang Klotek sword pup that will have a large piece of the mother corm attached to it.
It's a beautiful plant that grows what we believe will be dessert bananas.
All the plants in the US that we know of came from Mitchel by way of a guy in Hollywood that travels the world looking for crazy new things to bring back and sell or propagate at his nursery.
As it stands the only other plants that are in circulation are in the hands of Gabe and a nursery in Florida that Gabe gave a pup to.

This is the page in the wiki for the Pisang Klotek:
http://www.bananas.org/wiki/Musa_Pisang_Klotek

The stand is in a tight spot so to get enough of the mom's corm without killing it or the pup has been challenging so far, but the stand now has several plants and pups.

The stand on 6-01-07
The stand is growing new leaves again after being hit hard by the frost this past winter. All the pseudostems survived with no protection but all the leaves were lost.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=3216&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3216)

...and back on 10-23-06
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=1603&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=1603)

This is the actual pup that will be given away:

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=3225&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3225)

More pictures of the Pisang Klotek are here in this gallery album:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=599

Shipping out of the country is not going to work for Mitchel or the pup so lets keep the contest to USA members only.

The shipping should be UPS or USPS Priority to make sure the pup is still alive when it gets where it's going.
Mitchel will ship it before receiving the payment, but he would like the winner to reimburse him for the shipping costs asap.
It will probably cost 10, maybe 20 bucks to ship it. If someone wants to pick it up in person that's fine too!

TO ENTER:
Guess the amount of edible banana fingers the bunch on my Goldfinger finally produces.
The plant:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=3193&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3193)

the first hand of fingers:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=3195&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3195)

The thread with the progress up till a couple days ago is here:
http://www.bananas.org/showthread.php?t=1879
Progress reports will now be made on this thread.
Each day a new bract opens to show another set, so the contest will not run for very long... we should know the winner somewhat soon.

Reply on this thread with the number you think it will produce, and I will add your name next to the number you pick.
The person who guesses the right number, or if the exact number was not chosen, the person who came the closest will win.
Only one entry per number, and one entry per member.
If there is a tie (if nobody picked the right number but two people picked the two surrounding numbers), the person who guessed the number LESS THAN the actual number will win, for example, if the bunch ripenes with 20 and there were guesses for 19 and another for 21, the person who guessed 19 will win!)
The contest is limited to the first 200 entries (if we even reach that many).

Just a little fyi, this plant came from Sri Lanka. Hopefully if enough people share the pups it will become a common plant. It's certainly one of my favorites because of the color in the leaves.

Sorry about not being able to ship out of the country but I'm worried the pup won't survive the long transit time.

I should also add that in the strange chance this pup turns variegated and odd looking like one of the other pups I had to remove I will send you another hopefully normal pup from the same stand and I'll pay for the shipping on that one.

I can't think of a better bunch of people to share this with and I hope it grows well for the winner! :bananas_b

ok I've edited the first post with a new picture
The new picture is of the pup the winner will receive. It's a different pup than the one that was photographed before.

We had to change the pup because a new leaf opened up on the last one that's variegated - and the mother plant that it came from seems to be a little variegated also. So now the new pup that will be given away was a sucker off a different mother stem, a mother stem that's growing normally on the same mat.
Mitchel will keep the morphed plants to see how they progress.

To give you an example, this is what we mean:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=3226&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3226)
that's the new leaf that just opened

and this is the healthier pup that will be given away, for comparison:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=3227&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3227)

John

I don't know exactly, we don't have a thermometer outside but according to the weather sites it was in the low 30's. Cold enough to kill just about all the leaves but not the pseudo stems. During the cold snaps I left all the garage light's on, the garden lights stayed on all night, and did some wrapping and moving. I made a temp greenhouse over my pineapples which connected to a south/east facing garage wall. Throughout the beds I mulched old banana leaves for ground warmth. I even placed large rocks in strategic places to collect warmth from the sun and release it at night.

Hopefully that won't happen again!

We have friends who just sold their home in Topanga and are packing as we speak. They live at the very top with an awesome view of Redrock and the surrounding mountains, well not for long!

We have a winner!

Let's have a big round of applause for Kenzie (Kenzie_POM (http://www.bananas.org/member.php?u=63))

Kenzie guessed the correct number with a guess of 68 bananas.

Way to go! Congratulations!

First there were eight bananas, then another ten, another ten, ten more, another ten, ten more, then the final ten, for a total of 68.

Hello ya'll,

The plant has arrived. Just about jumped out of my skin when I saw the package leaning against the door.

Here is the box prior to unpacking:

Unwrapping the plant:

This is me getting advice on how deep to plant:

I have some pups, about the size of the one in the pictures. I have a couple of questions about shipping something like this. Do you cut off most of the leaves? From what I can see, there were only 2 leaves remaining. How was it sent; FedEx, United Parcel, Post Office, etc.? If it was by mail, was it Priority Mail, or regular parcel post? How big was the package? (Post office and United Parcel have surcharges for oversize packages.) How much did it cost, and how long was it in transit?
I would appreciate it if anyone could provide answers to any of these questions.
Thanks
John

This pup was shipped via UPS but I couldn't tell you how much it cost because I used my clients UPS number. The box was close to 6 feet long, about 7-8 inches thick and the plant was shipped with all the leaves. The reason it only had a few leaves was because it's a large sword pup. Most people will cut the whole plant in half only shipping about 2 feet of the corm and stem. I only shipped it the way I did because it was a contest plant and I wanted it to show up looking like a plant! I am not sure how long it took to get there. You would have to ask the new owner.
