I use Baking Soda & Powdered Sugar to kill my Ants, it might take a couple days, but effects are good.. I can wait for them to kick the bucket especially around my edibles.. So the question is does baking soda do anything to benefit my plants besides kill the Ants? :^)

Significant quantities of sodium will maim or kill most plants.

.. Ants... :^)
What the pros use. Boric Acid never fails (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Insect-Roach-Ant-Flea-Bug-Killer-Boric-Acid-100-2-X-5-oz-Bottles-Free-Shipping-/160862510627?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2574271e23)
Especially mixed with something sweet.
EDIT: I never spread it on the ground. Always mix it on wood/cardboard w/e and sit it near 'em, they always find it.

I know some people have soils which could benefit from a few grubs living in the ground. But here in the coastal-influenced areas of San Diego county, we have way more than our share of grubs, ants, snails ... the native environment is a haven for them. So to even the score, I put pyrethrin in my irrigation water every 2-3 months. It doesn't kill all the grubs and ants, but it knocks the density way down and the ants as a rule make their nests somewhere other than under my fruit trees. As I've mentioned before, for the snails I use an environment-friendly product that has only iron phosphate as the active ingredient: Sluggo is one example.
