A detailed answer is found if you Google Sun Footcandles.
It gives you a good idea.

I used 5 4 foot floresent fixtures with Gro/Lux bulbs and 2 300 watt Equivalant CF's with hoods all with a 6500 k rating. They all seem to be doing ok so far. New to this too.

You can always just copy and paste it here for others. Its not any easier to tell someone to go search google.
Direct Sunlight = 10,000
Full Daylight = 1,000
Overcast = 100
Indoor Window can be 100-5,000

My point was if you Googled it you have a wide variety of answers....and yes it is easier to to ask a person to explore their question using a search engine such as Google.

We'll I will have to respectfully disagree. My generation would have no problem. But my parent and grandparents would be another story. What is easy for you is not for many.
I quoted the biggest problem with telling them to google it. You don't need a wide variety of answers. You need the correct answer. I just googled it for fun and there are many wrong answers.
Last but not least the info is here. And now I made your life easier. All you have to say is search the forum.

Foot candles is not an appropriate unit for measuring radiation requirements of plants. To supply the minimum needed to a banana plant for over wintering, you need 30 Watts/sq.ft. of 6500K light source, and to actively grow them you need about 70 Watts/sq.ft. of 6500K light source.

Foot candles is better for human lighting needs. PAR or instantaneous light in micromoles (μmol) are better for plants.
Pretty broad statement there. What type of bulb are you referring to there? All lights are not equal. Incandescent at 70w/sq.ft. are not better than T5s at 30w/sq.ft.

Since I am kinda new to this, what kind of light, wattage, etc would be good to suppliment a banana with a south facing window in winter? Since the window is not huge, like 3x6 or something like that, the light will not be direct all day as the sun moves across the sky. Are Cfl lights better than fl? I cant afford a hid or what ever you call them right now. By supplimenting I don't mean on at the same time as day, just extra because the days are short and direct sunlight is not constant.

You Have a great window for them to be in 2050, Mine also have a similar window. I found a 300 watt Compact Florescent equivalent for 24 bucks that will put out 6500k. and a 10 dollar hood for them. I have just over 1000 watts on 9 plats that are 5 to 8 feet tall and have been for a week. No wilt yet. I just want to keep them alive for the winter and healthy, I dont care if they grow....cause they are almost too big now to be in. I am Just experimenting to see what happens. like I said I am new too

Mine are all small, maybe 2 feet and would like to put a little growth on them by spring. I have an Orinoco that is about 8 feet but am afraid it would go though the roof so will store that one lol, I just took a pup from it so it can grow as well. Bananas are addictive for some reason, I just started collecting them about a month ago, and already have four types, and three more types of seed to sprout.

I Know 2050, and we are just pups...there is so much info on here. ..I love it. I learn something new every day. Its like where I work the old timers think you should know the easy stuff...But if your just a FNG its a a mystery . I got on here to learn more. I am bringing all of mine in this year. next year I will plant some about a foot deeper and mulch them over for winter. I am not a fan of digging 200# trees out when they
are cold hearty. I dont know if you are wanting to grow fruit or just love the look??? I got a friend down the road that just cuts his down and mulches it over and it over 20 feet tall. Good luck either way.

Also I might add.....go to Youtube and do a keyword search on cfl grow lights or DYI grow lights, very informative.
A wealth of info on how to build them can be found there ,very inexpensive.
Alot of detailed info on what type of bulbs that you can use to suit your needs.
Much of the stuff that you need is around the house or at a big box store.
I use 6500 and 5000 k cfl in either spiral or tube.
I use the supplemental light for my tree ferns and spore propagation.....not any for the bananas, but the type of light is the same for both.

I do not know of any incandescent that generates a 6500 Kelvin spectral density.
