:witchnaner::witchnaner:I bought a couple of those big tubs with rope handles at wal mart and have moved my 2 largest banana plants into them. Well, I already drilled holes in the bottoms for drainage, but now I am having problems trying to find something that they will fit into to catch the water. They measure 54" around at the bottom. I live in zone 6 so I will have to bring them in soon before the first frost. We have wood floors, so I have to find something to put under them or move them into smaller planters. I thought maybe if I just water them VERY sparingly that I could put down large trash bags under them, just to protect the floors. They will have to be inside until late March/early April at least, if not a little longer. Any ideas??

Well if its 54" around its 17" in diameter roughly so if you go to Home Depot (they are cheaper and the black plastic works pretty good) and get a 22 or 24" Hot water heater pan and put a 1" plug in it, it will hold water.. If you get the 22" you can do it for under $11.. I think I have more than a couple.. :^)

Hi Liz,
Just in case you want to bring some of the pots into your living room and are prepared to invest
a bit of work, here is a “how to” make your own, see here: http://www.bananas.org/f2/water-catcher-large-pots-14549.html.
Of course I had the advantage to have to make them for square pots. :)
Good luck,
Olaf

This is your answer... I don't know if you've ever kept your bananas inside over the winter or not, but they require VERY little water... I water my indoor bananas no more than twice a month... Maybe even once every three weeks...

Liz,
for proper plant care, no matter, which kind, you need drainage through the bottom of the pots
and, unless you want to risk a mess on the floor or table/stand, you need some sort of water
catcher,Even if it is just putting the pot in a garbage bag, of which you can roll the sides down,
to resemble the shape of a "tray" more closely
A tip: before you put some soil into you new pots, cover the drainage holes with landscaping
cloth over a few little rocks. I previously used fly screen for that purpose, but it lets still some
dirt through.
Best,
Olaf

Cheap hard plastic wading pools are an option. Places like Home Depot, KMart, Walmart, etc have the 3' diameter and 5' diameter wading pools for $10-15. You could set multiple pots in them.

But like Duckfood said, take care not to overwater or you'll invite rot.
