View Full Version : I don't have a picture
indeed I don't even have a pup. But I've been offered 2 "Cuban bananas" from a lady on another forum totally unrelated to gardening. She says they grow like weeds; she lives further south and is probably in 10a or b. At first I assumed she was talking about a seeded variety because it sounded like her yard was being overtaken by new plants but apparently these just "litter" like crazy; she uses a machete to take out pups often. She says the fruits are small and very tasty; she did not say they were red which is the only color that came up when I search for "Cuban bananas". Plants are 12' or higher; they use extreme measures to harvest.
Any clue what they might be? (BTW, I PMed her this link but she's moving where she can't grow them so probably won't join. She was very impressed both by the knowledge here and how wild the members are about bananas.)

Can you ask her to get pictures? It could very well be Cuban Red, or some sort of plantain perhaps.
I did see a picture of her yard--not an identifying banana picture. Very tall definitely. She was very firm that these are "Cuban bananas"; I told her to join the site, post a picture and get experts to reply but she wasn't interested. Here in Jville nobody selling on CL has a clue what kind they're growing either but they don't make up some generic name. So I'm thinking "Cuban bananas" is a south Florida "thing" and thought perhaps someone would know what the heck they're talking about.
I don't think it's a plantain; she didn't mention cooking. Her description was small and tasty; if it's red, she would have said I'm sure.
I haven't replied to her yet but should; she really wants to send me 2 pups and wants nothing in return. So I feel like a beggar though I didn't ask; she offered. I've given away a lot of plants in my life (have none right now) but would prefer to at least trade or pay postage--KWIM?
ETA: So I replied. I merely said I would love to have more bananas to grow. If she asks for postage, that's fine. If not, I'll accept her gift.

Well I guess that's the only way to find out then isn't it? :)

Apparently. And we will all know what a South Florida "Cuban banana" is once you guys identify her. :ha:
