Hi All,

Please share your recipes for germinating Musa laterita seed with me.

I'm currently doing pollination of laterita with acuminata zebrina, malaccensis & AAA/AAAA pollen.

Thanks.

It was my understanding that Laterita has hermaphrodite flowers and as such it was difficult to cross pollinate.

You can use it as a pollen doner.

Well jmoore, you're certainly right in that laterita can and does self.

However that does not preclude crossing. The hybrids with acuminata types should be recognisable on 2-3 month's grow out of seedlings.

Currently I do OPP blocks; but laterita is short; very floriferous; and thus very amenable to my one man (well...one girl) operation.

Musa laterita has female basal flowers. It is easy to cross with Musa acuminata in both ways. I used to made those crossings some ten years ago.

Markku,

Any special tips for germination? In general I get a lot less seed from laterita than balbisiana , acuminata and other "Eumusa" types, so I have to have efficient germination - short of embryo rescue.

Thanks,
