View Full Version : Should I Repot These Before Bringing Them in for the Winter?

I have a couple of musa saba plants that I'm about to bring inside for the winter, as the night time temps are now dropping into the 40's. They are in 10" pots and I'm wondering if I should go bigger or leave them in these pots until next spring?

I got them as very small TC plants back in June and they've grown pretty well so far once they got going.

Nice plants! Yeah I got some around the time you did and I had to repot them because I couldn't keep the soil moist and a few were showing stress. You have cared for them very well so far but you know winter will slow them down anyways so maybe it would be alright to wait but IMO go ahead and repot. . . . before they show stress.

Leave them in their pots. That way they won't get too wet when you water.

Hi Howard,

you do not say, where you live and in which HZ. However since you consider bringing them
in, I presume, that is gets nippy in winter with accompanying low light conditions and, no, I would
not re-pot them now, Because with less light available their growth will slow down considerably.
Re-potting them now will just add to the stress of change of environment and the plants will
not be able to take advantage of the increased supply of soil. Do the transplanting in spring,
when it is warm enough to transfer them back outside and then give them time to adjust in a
shady location, before you expose them to bright sunshine.

Good luck,
Olaf

I agree with Dan: If you want any replies to your questions in his forum, which are
relevant to your situation, you should give us at least your climate information.

I am in Zone 5B borderline 6A, Chicago far western burbs.

For the past week or so I've been bringing all the potted ones inside at night as it's getting pretty chilly now with lows sometime down into the mid 40's. Probably within the next couple weeks they'll be inside for good until next spring.

Howard,

I'm in 5b Omaha, NE and I'll be repotting in a week or two before pulling them in for the winter. I guess I'll also have to find pots for a few I'm not leaving in the ground, too. I repotted last year in late fall and they did just fine, but like everybody says you should watch the water. Don't let them go to rot.

What's your indoor light situation?

Are you going to maintain or go for hibernation?

Personally, I'm going to try some of both. Store a couple away in the closet as well as put some under the grow lights in the basement.

Whatever you decide on, Good Luck!

I was going to try and maintain them in a sunny south window until next spring. I was also considering buying a couple LED grow light panel setups for several other plants I want to keep in the basement.

I don't think the sabas are pot bound right now, but if they grow any bigger while inside for the winter....

I've been informed by my significant other that there is a special hell for those who make a mess while trying to repot large plants in the house. . .
