View Full Version : Mona Lisa is fruiting, finally!
My 3 year old Mona Lisa, that has gone into the garage for winter storage twice, is finally blooming! Wohoo!
However it is September 2nd so what are the chances the fruit will have time to develop enough?
I live in Dallas Texas and usually my Nam Wah takes around 4 months to plump up and ripen. Guessing I can always take it inside but that is provided it has plumped up already.
Anyway I am curious to hear from anyone else who has grown Mona Lisa how long the fruit takes to ripen.
interested to hear your experiences! I sure hope it ripens faster than it blooms...

Abnshrek. The "this is worthless" response is getting old. If it was worthless, then it was worthless to respond.
nph, I am excited for you. If you can take it indoors for the winter and keep it from frost and freeze, absolutely go for it. You just might be surprised and how it might work out. I have seen stranger things. Some varieties need very little "tree" time to mature and will still ripen, and others need a lot of hang time t mature.
Also, if at some time you have pups, I would be interested. My "Mona Lisa" looks more like a Mysore. Please take some pix of the flow3ers, esp. the male flowers, when they show up. They would be help others ID their bananas,

Your right its not worthless, but I'm excited for someone on my plain, and similar growing zone to see what comes of this.. I think our intense heat may help over the next month maybe 2.. I'm hoping the farmer's almanac is wrong, and we have another mild winter.. I guess we'll see. :^)
Thanks,
Unfortunately it is in the ground so I cant really bring it in with the fruit on it like I did when I dug up the corn the last two falls and dragged it into the garage. My hope is for a mild all and no frost until late December so the fruit has a chance to plump up and I can cut it down before it freezes.
It loks like I might have one pup that I hope can be next (2015) fruiting tree.
If I get more I would definitely be open to sharing. I got this one from Going Bananas a few years back. Will take pics and post once the flower is open but so far it is only a flag leaf, so accurate title would have been, "flag leaf, finally blooming".

Time to make a temp greenhouse from pvc and plastic sheeting and a small heat source to help it survive the cooler temps this winter.
