I think your best chance is remove all leaves and place in water.

How big is it?

I would cut it and plant.

If there isn't any roots leave a few extra inches on the pseudostem.

Maybe 30 inches (76 cm)... I planted it as you see it in the picture... Haven't done anything else to it... There was one good root that made the trip...

You should be fine, the plants a little bigger than I like to move but it looks like a perfect cut.

I would cut it mid way between the bottom leaf and the corm and plant it in the ground.

Yes, I should have cut it from the mother a while ago... Just laziness on my part... So, leave about 6-8 inches???

I would cut it where the blade of grass is over the pseudostem, you might need the extra if it binds.

In the future, you can always make the cut and leave the pup in place for awhile in order for it to start new roots.

That's happened to me before too. Get a rooting hormone solution and soak it for a half an hour, then leave it out to dry in a cool spot for a day. Then, place it in a well-draining soil mix and cut off any leaves that die. You're lucky, it looks like it still has a decent chunk of corm on it. If the meristem isn't damaged, it has a chance of surviving.

Yeah, Caliboy... Good chunk of corm, almost 0 roots... That's the only reason I have any hope...

It just has a small sentimental value to me, which is the only reason I am trying...

No rooting hormone necessary.

Normally I cut straight down into the umbilical that connects the mother plant to the pup. After it's severed, I wiggle the pup and pull it out. Sometimes I have to lift upward with the iron bar under the corm or wiggle it some more to break some stubborn roots. I haven't had a single pup die with this method when performed successfully. This is my tool of choice. 72 inches, and weighs around 17 lbs.

I need to sharpen mine, it's gotten so dull after digging through corm and tough soil. :ha:

And you plant them just like this?

Yes

No special treatment?

If it doesn't rain, I will water them.

The Ae Ae should be sending out roots today, it normally takes about 10 days to root and another 20 days to push new leaves.

So glad I found this OLD thread. I just cut a manzano pup and I didn't get enough corm. Going to try and save it...... no leaves, cut the stem, put in a cactus soil mix, and watered well (once...I'll let dry before watering again). Now crossing fingers and hoping for the best.
