My question is:

What effect does bunch size have on time to maturity. In my mind I would think the smaller the bunch, the quicker time to fill = maturity. Theory being Mom plant does not have to feed as many nanners and they get fat due to being soiled rotten brats. Or is my theory wack because if she could have produced any more she would have, and like a good mom she feeds them what she can no difference in age to maturity?

Hi lpatelski:

I can't give you a definite yes or no answer, however fruiting trees will only produce an amount which the root/trunk structure and nutrients will support.

I've noticed on my pear tree, after blooming and it starts to produce fruit, some will drop off and the rest will continue on to maturity. They don't necessarily mature any faster.

Like wise my Cavendish has approx. 30 bananas this year. Some of the fingers on the lower hands did not fully develop and have shriveled up. So that tells me mama can't have nay more babies because of (?) root/trunk structure and nutrients will not support any more.

Does that make sense?

Brian

The question is now answered. We enjoyed our first Orinoco bananas picked on 10/29/2013. Mature time = 4 months almost to the day they turned yellow on this small group.:woohoonaner::goteam:

Sounds great. How's the taste?

My Cavendish fruit are about the same size as they were 3 months ago. I guess the cold has slowed them down a good bit. Either that or I need to give them more food.

I read somewhere that the Orinoco's mature pretty quickly. Need to get me some.

Thanks for the update.

Orinoco - fully ripened on the plant.

Peel: Thin and easy to peel. Under skin stings and tissue is easily removed.

Color: Off white with pastel light yellow-orange blush in the center and wetter looking parts when cut.

Taste: Sweet banana with loads of fruity notes like apple or juicy fruit gum(not as intense-but similar). I did not experience any sappy or unpleasant after taste.

Texture: Rich/Dense - not dry, not too gooey. Sort of like a slightly under baked brownie. No film left in my mouth or on my teeth like a store bought banana.
