Hello. I know true ice cream bananas seem pretty hard to come by. Someone gave me this banana plant and told me it was an ice cream, probably because where he got it from said it was an ice cream. can anyone help in identifying this banana plant? Thanks in advance.
2 things of note. There is a very thin red outline on the leaves, i mean very thin but you can probably see it in the pic of the underside of the leaf. Also, the undersides of the leaves are a very glaucous blue.

It's really hard to tell at this point. Big Tony told me that if you cut off a small piece of a leaf and let it dry, if there's a thick silvery wax coating on it then it's the real deal. My real Ice Cream has a very thin red outline as well.

I agree it is difficult to determine at this point. So far the p-stem doesn't have the yellow green color that they usually have, giving them a different look than namwahs. So if you're lucky, it will be a namwah. IMHO real Ice Creams are about the worst tasting variety I grow. I usually can't stomach eating more than 1 out of a bunch.

really, I dont care if it is an ice cream. I do want an ice cream and will get one if I have to but I just want to know what kind if it is identifiable just so I know what kind it is. I dont want to give a pup to someone saying its an ice cream if it isnt.

lol yea surrrrre they Don't just because there are sooo many categories sub-categories, groups, hybrids, blah blah blah. Research from all over the world makes for one big mess.
Just hope its some type of easy to grow parthenocarpic that tastes good :) Flower and fruit will not be a determining factor until you grow this multiple time for many years.
Its a namwah tho lol

Most likley a Namwah. I was not too impressed with the taste of Ice Cream. I've heard the Namwah has pretty good taste and should get try my first ones this year.

parthenocarpic=
In botany and horticulture, parthenocarpy (literally meaning virgin fruit) is the natural or artificially induced production of fruit without fertilization of ovules. The fruit is therefore seedless.

I don't think Blue Java is hard to come buy. People just need to buy Blue Java and stop buying Namwah.

No Problem, heck I never get what the tag say's when I'm buying a banana plant anyway:}
The Java I have is brown once I put cream in it and the beans are black before I grind them, lol

Been well over a year since it's been known that the one sold as Blue Java from agri-starts is namwah. Figure it out or do you need more time ?

If you don't get what the tag says then I think I would not buy according to the tag. Figure it out. Maybe someone can help you

your right. they arent that hard to come by. you just have to buy from a known true source. maybe im wrong but I seem to remember hearing that there have been several companies selling other bananas labeled as ice creams like wellspring, florida hill, ty ty. most likely their supplier sold them to them labeled as ice creams and im sure they arent the only ones.
the one I got was just a bulb gifted to me a couple months ago from someone who works at a landscape management company and got it from one of their suppliers a while ago. I have already gotten 3 pups off it and its throwing out another.

From what I understand you are right. The supplier is the mix up.
