View Full Version : Drops of water spontaneously forming on leaves?

So I've noticed, on my container-grown dwarf nana, that it seems to collect water on its leaves. This is sort of just a general knowledge question, I'm not really worried unless it's losing water through its leaves.

It forms at the tips and edges of the leaves. I water it at its base, so it's not from me, and I've checked the ceiling for leaks, but nothing. What causes this? Seems like a curious phenomenon. Thanks!

(By the way, first post - hello all!) :03::03:

Correct me if I am wrong, but this process is called 'Guttation' in Botany physiology study.

When the rate of water absorption is greater than the rate of transpiration ( Removal of water by evaporation ); water begins to accumulate in the plant body.

This excess water is FORCED out in the form of liquid droplets through the leaf pores or the stomata (In some plants there are water stomata or hydathodes specially for this).

This exudation of liquid water drops is called 'Guttation'

If the plant is water deficient; guttation will not occur.

So it looks like your Bananas are getting enough or too much water.:2738:

I don't think its getting too much water if this happens. A healthy banana plant that is actively growing really can't get too much water. I think its a good sign. I look for this when I plant bare root because it tells me the plant is finally getting water through its new roots. I do agree with the process that you're talking about.

I agree...guttation. Normal process, nothing to worry about. Continue care as you are.
