View Full Version : Second Annual Upper Gulf Coast Banana Meet 2013

It's that time again and hopefully we are giving a better heads up so more of you can attend.
This year we are meeting at my house in Pensacola, FL. Most of the group is growing other fruit trees too such as Blueberries, Blackberries, Muscadines, figs, pears, persimmons, citrus, pawpaw, pomegranate, quince, pecans, peaches, plums, jujubes and Bamboo (edible shoots). I am growing all of those except pears, jujubes and pecans. I plan to add pears soon. We also have an interest in tropical "looking" plants and landscaping from small planting to hardscapes. I'm sure we'll probably talk about everything. You are welcome to bring a guest or two or three if you decide to come.
We are planning on meeting on Saturday October 12, 2013 starting at or around 0800 until we all get tired and go home. Of course you can come whenever you want and leave when you want. We will not have any kind of strict schedule. We just want everyone to have a good time and talk about our plants and anything else that comes up. Hopefully we can all learn a little something from each others trials and tribulations! My place isn't huge but I have squeezed a lot into it. I'm just a little over an acre and it is all open to walk around a look at. I currently have twelve banana bunches hanging and a decent citrus crop. I may have some figs left hanging too.
I am providing lunch in the form of BBQ pork, chicken and sausage. We'll have BBQ beans, Cole slaw, Potato salad and some kind of desert (maybe cobbler). This is a family event and children are welcome as long as you can watch them. My yard is not completely child proof and I do have a swimming pool near where we will be eating and relaxing.
I will have banana pups but mostly common varieties and some dwarfs. I'm sure Bo (Hydroid) will have some too! I may have some rooted fig trees to share. I will have a few fig trees large enough to take some cuttings. I will have a few muscadines in pots. Also I have way too many 1 gallon pots that you are welcome to get some if you want. Also there will be a few persimmon whips available. None of this is for sale, so don't worry about that. We all try to share as many plants as we can to keep costs down.
I hope you can come. Please bring someone with you. We are trying to involve the wives and in the case of females members maybe a husband or significant other. If you are uncomfortable I know my wife will be there and I fairly sure another two couples will be here.
Feel free to call me if you have any questions. PM me for number. If you are interested in Bananans and other fruiting plants this will be an excellent time to make contacts and we'd sure like to see you there.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Darkman, it is really nice of you to hold this annual meeting and I hope to come by this year. I am from over here on the Alabama region of the Upper GC and would love a chance to talk to some other growers. I have two bunches right now, one is a Nam Wah and the other I am not sure of the variety. I also have gingers, lots of elephant ears, figs, pears, satsuma, blueberries, blackberries, pecans, and grapes.
If I am not busy that weekend, I will try my best to come by and bring a cake for all to enjoy.

Sounds like fun! I m new to bananas.org. and I live in the lower gulf coast. I moved up from south FL 13 yrs ago. And I am still trying to grow tropicals! I have just recently started searching for cold hardy bananas and other cold hardy fruit trees. I used to attend all sorts of plant societies and plant shows in palm beach county and Miami. But there are not any meetings where I live now :( I am about 4 hrs away. But I have a sister near mobile. So maybe I can plan a trip!

Aupoet and Guepster,
Glad you may make it. I have a decent collection of cold hardy tropical "looking" ornamentals and cold hardy fruits. There will be several people attending that have similiar interest. I'm sure you'll be able to make some great contacts and get ideas on what you can grow.
Looking forward to meeting you!

Hi everyone,
It looks like we will have a good turnout! I have about thirty confirmed and many more hoping to make it. There will be a good bit of diversity among us a well with interest in citrus, pears, figs, muscadines, blueberries, ornamentals and even an water gardener plus many others. Oh I almost forgot there seems to be a good bit of interest in the FREE BBQ lunch!
Make your plans to attend! October 12th 2013

Awww....You all are so kind!
Really is too bad on my end as well, now that Ebay and Amazon sales have dropped off to Zero I got stuff, lots of stuff to share. Odds and ends of everything all in 3-4 inch pots.
All this stuff now has to go into 1 gallon pots and off to the flea market.
I loath the flea market, not near as fun as spending the day with a bunch of people as amused with plants as I am.
Well, maybe next year!

Darkman,
I thought I would bring the two coffee pots & cooler over first part of the week to your house, if that is ok? Will call before I come. That way you will already have them. I will be happy to help with some of the set up that morning (or are you ding most of that on Friday day) & clean up after. Do you think you will need another card table or chairs?

I will be here from Wednesday on till the meeting.
The help will be appreciated. I'm sure we will finish staging early Saturday morning. TJ and Darrell from Baton Rouge are coming in early to help with the heavier stuff but the finishing touches you could definitely help with.
I'm evaluating the tables now. I am still getting replys to the invites so as we get closer I'll have a better head count and I'll know about the tables.
A lot of offers to bring cakes so we might need a card table for them.
Thanks for your help.

You guys need to stop this! It's too far for me to drive so I'm crying here!
BTW, my late mother was born and raised in NO; graduated from Tulane Law School at age 20 (1 month shy of 21). I didn't learn to love the cuisine until after I grew up. Daughter of a professor, she never "acclimated" so never tasted much of the bounty. Her idea of red beans and rice was....drum roll...a can of Hanover Kidneys and a mess of Minute Rice served with ketchup so it was really red. Well, blech! After I figured out how to make rice, I made it for her often until she passed in 2005; she knew what real rice tasted like but, book smart lady, couldn't figure out the 2 to 1 ratio. Me? I'm into pilaf or fried and sometimes sushi--otherwise? Nah...I keep seeing that red box when I encounter the white stuff.

That's where all the flavor is.. I pick it out w/ my pinky finger.. Ew We some good stuff.. :^)I just realized I don't think I've ever dined on anything "above the neck" ever. Brains I pretty much sent off the list of "might tries" after hearing the story of an ambassador served fresh monkey brains--sword whacked off the top at a black tie affair and then the dipping began.
I'm game for tongue, cheeks and other parts. Eel? Had my go around with that--prepared 7 ways at the home of a Danish business associate. Other guests turned up their noses so, I being very polite, downed the jigger of Schnapps (different flavor for each course) and swallowed the eel. Tasted fine going down--not so good coming up at 3 AM. Was it the thought of eating snake or was I just really loaded? Not sure but I've avoided both since then.

Speaking of French bread...I have a kick butt sourdough starter that began in from MD (2007) then traveled to Ruidoso back to MD to Costa Rica back to MD then to OH (multiple trips between) to Roanoke, VA got stuck in the OH/MD route then off to Atlanta and finally arrived in FL where it's now been to Jacksonville and Cocoa. Since arriving in FL, it tastes like a young wine as does the bread I bake with it. Any clues as to why that would be? (I figure a bunch of foodies would know.)
BTW, in honor of Saturday I'm smoking ripe jalapenos (drying them afterwards) and attempting gyro meat with beef sans lamb. (Cannot locate ground lamb down here--these people haven't a clue how or what to eat.) If I can find my bulghur or a place to purchase some, I'll also make some pretend kibbehs.

And for ground lamb, ask your local Publix to get you some in. They're often good about special orders. Or there's a meat market in Gainesville too, I've seen them mention lamb.
Asking a friend, call up Wally's Bakery and Subs in Jacksonville on Cesery blvd. They sell ground lamb.

Should be either $3 or $4/lb. I can't remember if the guy said $2.99 or $3.99. Give them a call. They should still be open.
I'll eat your share of the mudbugs, shrimp, crabs and eel! Plus catfish. Anything but oysters, really. Never liked oysters. I grew up commercial fishing the St Johns for blue crab and eel, and also fished mullet, bait fish and shrimp in proper season.

By the way when you suck the heads (cephalo-thorax) of a crawfish, you are not eating the brains which are very small and kind of out of the way. There are buttery glands (hepatopancreas) which are attached to the stomach that your are mostly getting. I am sure you all were dying to hear this information.

So do you spit out the eyes? ;)
Hey, DM, sorry for hijacking your thread. About half of the brain is in the eyestalks, then there is piece just above the esophagus and a little more of it beneath the esophagus. Not a whole lot there and sucking the heads will likely leave that anatomy mostly intact. Make a good anatomy paper, the effects on neuroanatomy in cooked crawfish after head sucking.

Hey, DM, sorry for hijacking your thread.
Blatant Hijacking for no good reason is not good but when the conversation flows that way I don't have a problem at all in my threads. Many times the secondary subject is more interested than the first, elsewise why wouldn't we still be addressing the original question. couple that with no one knows the answer and you have a perfectly good reason to move on. Moving on is what I prefer to call "reasonable hijacking"!.
To me the forum is like a our club and we come and go as we please and talk with whomever we want engaging in as many topics of conversation as our time will allow. It would be nice if we all were set up to have huge live video chats with 40" screens and we could reach up to the screen and drag our butts to a new conversation group. Of course we all pretty much are self concious about are appearance and it would necessitate we get out of our PJ's or worse before engaging in the conversation. LOL Maybe you could have a stand in avatar for those days that we don't look like Batman and Cat woman.
Hey did I Hijack my own thread? Is that possible?
Hope all you can make it here safely.
Next time we can do a East meets West! A Low Country Boil/BBQ! Man that seafood is crazy expensive. I did one for twenty people two weeks ago and the cost was $400.00. It did include some real nice fat succulent Snow Crab legs and fifty pounds of fresh Pensacola bay Shrimp. So fresh I swear I heard shrimpy screams as they jumped into the well seasoned pot.
Dang it did it again!
OK Kat and Wolfyhound sorry you'll miss it! The rest of you lurkers get in you car and come on! There will only be anguish and regret later!

So I did some searching to see if any photos had been posted somewhere besides here. Word of warning: do not search "Passed out banana". Just don't.
Geez, guys, we'll love seeing your unphotoshopped mugs including your bulging bellies after eating 10 bazillion pounds of 'cue and even try not to hate you for all those pups/plant goodies you've been passing around. (And if I get a place here on the East, I'm hosting. A few years ago, I organized 60 member swaps with GW. We did potluck, it always rained and sometimes the police were called to dispatch the nutty plant folks--good times.)
I'm bored--give me a bone.

I'll definitely do my best for the next time. And I might even be able to contribute to the seafood... did I mention I grew up commercial fishing and some of my family still does it.... I didn't? Hmm.
Gotta love a lo boil.
Waiting for pics here too. Considering the truly lousy day I had at work(work-the reason I wasn't at a awesome banana party!), I would greatly have preferred banana talk.
I hugged my non-BlueJava today. It helped a little.
I hugged my non-BlueJava today. It helped a little.Hehe. I sent someone to get me a true Ice Cream along with a few others; he decided to keep it and the bird of paradise palm meant for me. Turns out that IC is one of those non blues, too. I would have given him pups but he was stingy. Karma! ;)

Some pictures are coming. I believe Abnshrek is posting them. I am exhausted. Went to bed at 1:00 am and was up at 4:30 am. I believe we had around 35 people total. Many brought plants and there was some jostling for prime plants. I believe everyone that wanted something pretty much got it. SBL (Skeet brought some Mrs. Holland avocado bud wood and a Citrus forum member brought some seedlings and suddenly we had grafting class with numerous individuals being the receipient of grafted Mrs. Holland Avocados. Considering these cannot be bought that was a pretty good score. Altogether I believe about forty various banana pups changed hands. There were quite a few gingers that traded hands. I am a whipped puppy and there are still dishes to do. More later.
Guests should do the dishes. Just saying. ;) Smokin' is hard work--done right. Sounds like a wonderful day. Thanks for checking in.

OK here's the Skinney,,,
Food, Fun and Fellowship was FANTASTIC!!
Charles and his family welcomed everyone in a grand fashion!!
It was a lot of work for them and I just want to publicly thank them very much! I had a BLAST!
As Charles mentioned Mr. Skeet enlightened us with his vast knowledge of ALL Plants in general:}
I asked every question I could think of and he was kind enough to answer.
I was one of the fortunate folks to receive a grafted Ms. Holland Avocado Plants. My promise was to keep everyone posted on how it progresses and I WILL:}
I was also honored to receive a Super Bum banana plant which fits me and my lifestyle perfectly lol
We were treated to a presentation on keeping bee's which was entertaining as well as very informative:}
Anyway here a a few pics that I took, I vowed to take more however; I was so amazed and grateful to be able to meet such great folks and receive such great information and hell having such a good time, I didn't have time to take more pictures lol Sorry!
OH did I mention how GREAT the food was? :}
Again thanks everyone for your friendship and genuine concern...it was a great day! I like DAT me!

It was great event. I arrive about 11:00 since the early morning was spent taking a couple of colleagues from Georgia Tech and UWF out to go shooting. Got back home at about 10 took care of my bulldog puppies and headed out for the event. The most important thing that I gained was a lot of knowledge. Skeet is actually Dr. Lores that is a highly published environmental scientist. I learned a lot from Skeet about plants and grafting. I also invited a colleague to come the get together from the local UWF and we had learned some important environmental facts that will help us with a paper we are writing on our local Escambia Bay. We found non-degraded DDT in the river system and skeet told us that the local cotton farmers had managed to get ahold of DDT which is not legal to use in the US.
Oh by the way the food was great and I apparently ate too much. I felt a little ill and very tired for some reason and left at 3:00. Other than giving the pups a couple of short walks spent the remainder of the day/evening napping off and on. I will go out now and water the plants I picked up and start stacking some firewood.

Charles - It was a long day but a great day - thanks for hosting the event
Sorry, no pics - I was so busy gathering pups to bring that I forgot my camera.
- I looked for you when we (Darrell and I were leaving) but you had disappeared - Skeet and the Bee guy were excellent additions to an already fantastic day. Abnshrek (Michael) I'm going to enjoy the datil and stubby D.braz -got back to Biloxi late but, they are going into the ground today. My wife was excited over the plumeria, another great addition for the patio.
Barbeque, great sides, and some cajun dishes, and deserts were yummy
but I did doze a few times after all that food during the bee class.
Snookie and the Super Bum are an excellent match, please post some pics when it grows to adult size.
It was great meeting everyone in person and matching posts with real people - Darrell and Snookie treated us to some laughable cajun flavored conversations.

Man,,looks like you folks had a blast and the surrounding were beautiful. Almost felt as if I was in Panama. Beautiful place you have Charles and so sorry we missed it. Next year for sure. Way to close to miss.
I knew I should have told the wives to take pictures. Sheesh! Only 4 handsome men--Bee guy and 3 members didn't cut and run. (I was expecting a nice posed group shot like Snookie's; we always did that for swaps.) Oh, well! Beautiful yard. I so admire people who hardscape to match their landscape; the ability to do that is a true gift.

Charles - Hope the B'day gig went as well as the nana meet - it was a blast. Thansk to you and Tammi for all the effort that went into this...
Snookie - Chainsaw huh? I've heard that same comment from my wife..sitting in the shade on the patio with a full belly, dozing was a done deal...
Hope everyone's new pups have a happy home.
You can post some large files by using Photobucket - you have to upload them to photobucket as jpg files- once they are there , simply copy the img url and paste in your nana message....hope that helps.

Anybody know why these are showing rotated? They are not in the album?
EDIT Thanks to whoever fixed these. Kat if it was you I appreciate it.
I see this a lot. I always fix them on my computer by left clicking and then picking rotate before I post them anywhere. But if they were right on your system, it might not work.
ETA: Opening the photobucket link shows them sideways so you need to correct 1st.

But I'm glad they're straight! Finally got to see the BBQ device without turning my laptop on its side. Looks like gas to me...even turning it way down and adding wet chips can't turn that into a smoker. Just saying. ;)

No I use an electric smoker and a cheap one. It is made by Masterbuilt. It isn't as romantic as a wood smoker but its very effective with digital controls and if you control the amount of wood you put on you can get a very good product. It isn't very fancy but I get no complaints from my guest . The grill is just for grilling vegetables. I have no secrets and everyone can have my recipe. It is the attention to detail that makes the difference.
I miss my Brinkman bullet. I had a gas grill for pizzas to die for; I never figured out how to do them over wood/charcoal.

Just makes me wonder why all of a sudden the thread was abandoned...just when the fun was starting for the rest of us distant voyeurs...I'll keep checking in
I have not problems checking and rechecking the thread. I'll even comment once in a while to keep it bumped.

So let me stir up a little chat with you all. When & what do you do for the winter to protect bananas? Anyone have any photos of how you wrap your plants you want to fruit the next year? This is my first time not bringing them in to the greenhouse.

I'm a little warmer then you during the winter but I took on some not so cold tolerant types this year. I plan on taking some of that plastic green fencing with some bamboo as stakes and creating a big ring I guess about 18-24 inch from the trunk and filling it with leaves and hope for the best with the insulation from the leaves against the wind. That's the plan anyway unless I see a better solution while I am bouncing around here, but it's just not an option for me to drag 17 different types of bananas indoors from the ground with everything else I have that is in pots already. Right before the first big hit of cold it's just a slow going panic making sure everything is not bug free but at least spider free. We have Giant crab spiders here and if you have ever seen them you know you don't want them in the house...yikes!
So that's my plan anyway.

I did put some thought into where I put the tender ones, in more protected areas from the wind, my main concern is my 1000 fingers I don't know that they live this far north? So I have been thinking about potting up a pup to bring indoors (the only one I would bring indoors)...there all under 4 foot tall now so it's not a big deal on the 1000 fingers.
Fantastic you got fruit on your herbs even if they got some damage.
I'll keep that in mind and try not to panic..LOL

I as well have mear babies and some I started from seed, besides my Ensete Glaucum which are now almost to the roof in just this past year (Cold hearty so not worried) I think my largest is right about 6 foot tall (Helen's hybrid) and the next would be about 4 foot 1000 fingers and they go down down down from there to about 18 inch seedlings.
I can do ANYTHING snakes, rats, big beatles, strange unknown things but don't let me come into the same space with something that has 8 eyes and 8 legs and will chase you weeding mulch, fall on you from tree branches and hunch up at you ready to pounce...the icky thing is as big as the palm of your hand, some bigger! Creeps me out thinking about it

Yep They are my main issue as well. Had a brown recluse bite me on the ankle a number of years ago so I DO NOT DO Friends with Spiders.
If i understood several talking on winter protection...I think I will be trying:
Fencing of some sort, leaves & grass or wood mulches "inside the fencing around the pups and newer plants" for sure. Wrap the outside of the fencing with frost cloth (my choice to try this year, I think). Then I thought tie rope, jute or such around that for those super windy days.
Questions:
1. Heard someone mention adding manure around mat as part of the winter protection? Would I pile that at the ground level with the mulch?
2. Someone mentioned folding leaves down around the plant, tying loosely before the fencing.
I realize after this season I may be able to relax on this some what, but this year I want to Protect more. Just hope I do not kill them with love...

@ DB1 When you and Joe come over I will walk you through my Winter preparation. We still have a good bit of time. You should start collecting dry leaves and pinestraw to fill the cages.

1. Personally I am not doing the manure for over wintering. Bananas stop growing much if at all after 40? Degrees. My fear is that it just sits there and has the ability to burn and is a waste for winter.
2. I thought about getting some burlap bags for the leaves but it was a fleeting thought, mine are so small anyway, I'm more concerned about the P-stem and the corms, our winters go from one extreme to another quickly we can be 30 one day and 70 the next ...I would go insane with fighting the leaf fungus because of the rains.
For my ginger and heliconia garden which are butt up against the neighbors fence I use that same green fencing, in the wood border I had the honey drill holes for the PVC stakes and I zip tie the fence to it and fill the "BOX" with leaves, some of my gingers are so intolerant to cold, but they fair really well with this system and then the bonus is I have suffocated the weeds I missed as well, by the time winter is just about over everything has settled down and I have to remove very little and all new shoots are coming up to greet spring.

I think it is important to note that bananas contain a lot of water. I will only fold down dried leaves no green ones. My reasoning is that I want a dry insulative environment as water will not insulate well and will start decomposition. I want it sealed and dry. Those conditions are best for Winter protection.

Ohhhhh So glad you mentioned that. I had not though about that. I do know I was cautioned about being careful not to use Plastic to wrap for that reason and that it might also cook the plants (greenhouse effect) since we are so bad about warming up here in Pensacola.
Thanks Darkman, you save a Nanner or two!!

WOW Some great thoughts, Great idea for the ginger & heliconia. I have a spot where that will be perfect to test :) ummm so true on the "fighting fungus issues" I would have that here I'm sure.

Fred - Congrats on your cado - my grafted cado, unfortunately, didn't take.
You must be doing something right..
The variety is named Mrs. Holland after the owner of the original tree somewhere in Texas. The fruit is on the small side (definitely not worthy of the Parton name :ha: but the tree is said to be very cold hardy.

The grafted seedling is thriving and the Mrs. Holland seedling is doing great also but neither the T or cleft graft survived. - Maybe Skeeter will be willing to try again or share some wood?
I have one Duke seed so far that has sent up a sprout.
