This is a plant my aunt gave me last summer. She said it was a banana plant. I didn't know there were so many different types of plants. I cut the first plant she gave me last summer back the end of winter and this pup came out. Will it grow back after winter? How do I know its dead? I don't know the first thing about banana plants if you can't tell. :)
Can you tell me what kind of banana plant I have and will it produce fruit.
Thanks, Patrice

Yup that's a banana :D
All bananas produce fruit eventually, but if you let what you see die each winter, then no, you won't get fruit. The current plant you see needs to live long enough to flower and fruit, which is more than a year. I don't know which that is, let alone which species of banana (hardy or tropical and edible) but I'm sure someone else will know.
If it dies this winter, yes, it will spring back up another pup since it's already done so. So that being said, what zone are you in? Zone 8 - It could be a Namwah, Orinoco, or Basjoo. Zone 7 and below - Basjoo or other hardy ornamental. Zone 9 and up - Could be anything except Cavendish or Red types.

not sure but it looks like an Orinoco. Check the site wiki to get more info and pics and do google to find more. Many pics help also but from what I understand it is hard to id until a bloom. Good growing and stay healthy

Even an Orinoco can get burnt to the ground being that young.. The key is get it more established, by feeding it to a point it can endure your cold weather if in fact its an Orinoco (which it could be). Good Luck.. :^)

It's hard to tell at this point, but it looks like an ABB genome edible. If you can get it to flower and fruit you should have bananas.
