Hello

Anyone growing fall (Halloween) pumpkin's?

I going to give it a go this week, hoping to find plants already started however; am not opposed to seeds:}

I need help with soil suggestions since I will attempt to grow them in the tires like I did with the potatoes as some of you may remember.

Any advice would truly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I am growing giant pumpkins, regular Jack-o-lantern pumpkins, little jacks, and bumpy gourds in my swamp ground. The pickle moths(gourd boring worms) are really bad here this year. I will be lucky to get anything that is not riddled with holes and rotted by October 29th, carving day:2169:. I'll take some pictures. http://i856.photobucket.com/albums/ab122/spatelski/Going%20Bananas%20in%20June%202013/ec520556-cd2f-414a-a73c-b0881f89a1a0.jpg (http://s856.photobucket.com/user/spatelski/media/Going%20Bananas%20in%20June%202013/ec520556-cd2f-414a-a73c-b0881f89a1a0.jpg.html)

I want to do banana vampire looking gourds this year!

Snookie - not doing pumpkins this year and never have grown in tires- They take up a lot of room - good luck - better get started soon as they take awhile to mature - if you want big ones you will need to cull the vines so the ones remaining get more vitamins.. :woohoonaner:

This is my second year of growing pumpkins in tire raised beds. I have them out at my mom's because I don't get enough sunlight in my at home garden. Slightly sandy soil with well rotted manure, warmth, and water and they do very well. I have small pumpkins forming now. Also have squash and edible gourds going as well.

It's late July and you're only now planting pumpkins?? I grow pumpkins, moreso for eating than carving, but I haven't tried them in tires yet. I grow mine in kiddie pools, the plastic blue ones. My main suggestion is like most say - Provide some very fertile soil! And for me, I always try and push people into companion planting. Throw some beans in there :)

I have had pumpkin soup overseas and really did not like it. How do you prepare your pumpkins for eating and do you prefer a particular kind for consumption?

They are very simple to grow. Get some cow manure or compost, make sure they get plenty of sun and water (avoid powdery mildew) and you will be OK.

The only think you need to worry about and look for are this puppies below, they will destroy your crop in a matter of weeks and there is nothing you can do about it.

Other than that Happy Grow!!

I usually grow sugars for eating and then "something else" for Halloween - giants, ghost or whatever else looks interesting. And I find them relatively easy to grow, just plant and water....but then our soil is pretty good and does not need any "extras". You would definitely have to start with plants of a good size if you start now and you could try the tires. A good soil mixture would be a must - I find black earth works well mixed with a little manure, but not too much or it can burn in such a confined area - lots of sun and water regularly......and plenty of room for them to spread (some of the vines I have will eventually reach to the back fence, about twenty feet away from the plant)

Why are you starting these so late? I'm not familiar in growing things in your climate zone, but around here, if you don't already have large plants with developing pumpkins on there at this time, you won't get much of anything significant by Halloween. When we grew pumpkins and gourds and that kinda stuff in the past, we started them from seed around mid May or early June.

Well down here you can double crop since it won't frost till late Nov/ Early Dec.. I just planted more Cucumbers, tomato's, and watermelon.. Maybe I could carve a Watermelon.. just stick one end in a pot.. :^) :^)

Answering what I do with pumpkins - There's pies, cookies, breads, the seeds are great for drying and/or roasting to eat and add to things, and then there's also soup too.

I'll agree there are other squashes that taste better, and for me I love sampling heirloom types, so, so far I find the all-time sweetest, best squash to be "Gil's Golden Pippin" - Amazing rich sweet flavor!!

Seeds in the tires seem to be doing better than the hill planted seeds, hummm maybe the tire holds the heat better?

Or maybe rubber is a good fertilizer for Jack-O-Lanterns lol

Why sure! I've already harvested the majority of my pumpkins. I grew Long Island Cheese pumpkin, Musquee du Provence pumpkin, a volunteer butternut, and a volunteer small pie pumpkin. The LIC pumpkin grew prolifically and produced nearly all my fruit. The MDP didn't produce a single fruit. All the little MDP fruitlets fell off before they ever developed. I thought pollination might be an issue, so I even started hand pollinating. No luck. The volunteer butternut is producing huge fruit, but the plant seems incapable of producing more than one fruit at a time. I've harvested 2 already and one is on the way. I probably won't get any more pumpkins. Between deluges, heat waves, and powdery mildew, my poor little vines look like someone set a match to them. Any suggestions?
