Hey Folks
Is this a flag leaf? Or is it my 69 year old eyes deceiving me with hopes for two nanana's flowering in the same season possibilities:}
It's much shorter than the other leaves and is from the Lizard Creek No name species lol
It was the first banana I ever planted; it was given to me by a hippie that worked at a local nursery that had obtained it from an elderly couple in Baton Roach, La. that no longer wanted bananas near their house...plantain is what he told me it was but you know those Hippies sometimes well U know lol
So....if I could get some help to determine if oldtimers has set in or what; and what variety you think this plant may be I'd appreciate it.
Thanks
S.

I was kinda thinking that it was the half leaf and the flag will be next. Does everyone disagree with me?

It's a half sized leaf that shows up before the flag leaf. Not all plants show a pre flag though.

I vote pre-flag.

I thought the half leaf was the flag leaf. As the little on attached to the bud is usually so small and falls right off after the bloom starts to open.

That's interesting. On mine, I find the flag leaf remains attached even until I harvest. Usually by the time I see the flag, the base of it is so much wider that it is clear the inflorescence is coming too.

I've had some flags stay on almost until the bunch is ripe, and then some turn brown and fall off pretty quickly or just sit there stuck to the bunch.
Mike the pre flag is bigger. The flag is a little guy, just slightly bigger than the flower bud.

What is that, an Orinoco?
The "red stripe" on the stem is typically what mine put out just before throwing a flag or flower; at any rate, the flower bud won't be long now... congrats on the pending hatching! ;)
Oh yah... like previously mentioned, sometimes there's no "half" leaf, (or it comes out looking like a full size leaf).
The "red stripe" is the tell that the flag & bud are about to pop!

Why thank U Bob3
That supposedly according to an Old Hippie working at a local nursery is a Plantain?
Myth is it came from some nana plants he removed from an old Baton Roach, Louisiana neighborhood where the home owner no longer wanted the plants next to his house so he hired the hippie to remove them.
One day while I was looking for nanna's that would survive the cold weather we sometimes get here in Lizard creek he mentioned he had recently discarded a matt of hardy nanna's andgo out into the woods and see if any were still alive.
He brought me back a nanna NO LEAVES just some roots and wrapped in news paper.
I planted it 2 1/2 years ago and WAH LAH here it B:}
Maybe when is delivers someone who knows what it is will chime in and tell me what variety it is:}
I'd appreciate dat!
Then of the 20 or so nanna plants I have I will have identified 3 lol
Again thanks

I call that thing the penultimate leaf. The last dwarfed leaf before the thick short flag. Snookie should see fruit this year since it's July. :08:
In 8 years of growing naners on 12 mats I've seen this about a dozen times.

Dan,
I have about the same amount of mats but I haven't not seen one not have a half leaf. Granted I've only been growing for three years. That is so bizarre. I thought all bananas had that . The three varieties I have observed this on is Tall Namwah, Goldfinger and Orinoco.

So what's the word Mayor? Is the flag poking out yet?
Snookie should see fruit this year since it's July. Yah, but as for eating any, maybe closer to next spring, depending on how nasty a winter he's getting down there. Some late bloomers we've had have gone close to a year when cold weather slowed them down.
That supposedly according to an Old Hippie working at a local nursery is a Plantain?Orinocos are a "dual purpose" 'nanner; fry 'em up as tostones (they caramelize & taste great because of their high sugar content) or let them hang 'till yellow & ripe. (one of the few cultivars that won't bust open if left hanging to ripen).
