You would have to bring it in during the winter, they don't like weather in the 40's..

I don't have anywhere inside to bring it. I don't get any frost at my place, but it does get into the lower 40's. Hopefully that doesn't hurt it too much.

Awesome! How long did it take and how large was your plant you got? Mine was a small plant from Logees but nice and healthy,it's nice and thick and three tall now a few months later. It's kinda shaded under the other large mats around it.

Glad you noticed that.. They are getting lighter.. I'm fixing to bag them.. I guess my Banana Crack is doing good. Of course its a combination of all the tips I've gotten on here, and probably the most input from Dan, but Steve hooked me up with the plants, I can only say Thanks once again. :^)

I think its a great plant for people who can store properly over winter and gives them a good shot of growing banana's in a marginal area's such as 7a-8a where it gets very warm in the summer, and into the fall. :^)

Hey Harvey whatever happened w/ yours?

I noticed today that one of my three larger Veinte Cohol plants is flowering. Been too busy with farm work to pay much attention to them. This one flowered at about 5.5 feet high.

This variety is supposed to be fast to mature, but I can't imagine it being fast enough with this thing flowering this late in the year.

Mine all died. :( I had one flower very late in the year and they never developed and that entire mat froze to death. My greenhouse was too crowded and I was hoping that at least one would survive the winter but they proved to be very susceptible to cold weather.

So here we go... Not fully ripe, I'm sure them peels have some more flavor in them for the nanners.. Started on the tart side and finished w/ a citrus flavor.. Not mealy, or soft like an orinoco, but not a treasure like a Manzano. Like I said not completely there but still better than a Cavendish.. :^)

http://i1362.photobucket.com/albums/r698/Bucko13f/VC102513_zpsb7bfa11d.jpg (http://s1362.photobucket.com/user/Bucko13f/media/VC102513_zpsb7bfa11d.jpg.html)

Peel is thin but surely has more for the nanners since the ends are still green.

So I had 5 (3 this morning and 2 this evening) today and I'm sure they will be better over the next 2-4 days.. I think I have 14 left from the top half of the bunch after giving some to the Neighbors & Friends here.. So I'll be glad when the bottom half gets ripe.. :^)

Well its day 5 from cutting and the top half of the bunch are gone.. The peel is getting really thin but not turning black. They are sweetening up and have a kiwi-ish flavor to me. I think I'll have a couple in my cereal in the morning.. :^)

10-31-2013, 10:52 AM
Well its been a week and a day since I cut the bunch.. Banana's are a little sweeter, but have the same fruity flavor, peels are paper thin. My squeeze says they are so thin it a pain to peel them, since the peel breaks easily. I find after eating one this morning then a manzano not completely (they need to sit another day or two) to my liking my vote goes to VC hands down.. :^)

What a great report Abnshrek! How exactly did you overwinter your VC, and was it established in the pot before bringing it indoors?

It probably had 3 weeks in a 25 gal pot before I transported them to La to put in my Little Banana grow room.. where I had a heater go out, but it only got in the low 50's so it was fine.. As you can tell from previous pages in the thread the mother did fruit from a similar height when I planted it last spring.. :^)

Beautiful plant, Migael.

I've started to decrease my holdings of this cultivar, the bunches/fruit are just too big, making hand removal difficult and time consuming.

Going to thin this one out very soon.. Tallest is 6'6" of stem so only 5 more inches to get to PR's VC height @ bloom, but I don't think it will get there.. :^)

Ya you'll be covering that massive thing with frost cloth to get you some ripe nanners! Lol I bet the size will actually help to keep the heat in, but gunna be fun gettin the cloth on.

I might have stated I might give PR a run for the record, but I doubt it since I have limited sun over time, but so you all know where I'm coming from.. I have 3 good stems, 2 have fruited, the 1st @ 6'9". The stem that hasn't fruited was nonexistent when I put the corm in the ground in the spring, now it is 6'4" and 3" & change fatter @ the base of the stem vs 1st fruiting stem. The Limits on this stem is going to be Sun over the next 2 months, good thing its in full sun. I look forward to see what it puts out.. :^)

2017 was just another year my Veinte Cohol fruited, except this time it was in a pot probably cuz I was to lazy to stick it in the ground.. I'll never do that again, cuz those normally delicious treats aren't so good when it flowers in a pot. I'd only use a pot as a means to keep this type alive thru the winter and that's it. Just thought i'd let u fine folks know.. Keep on Growing :^)

the Banana Flowers and fruits in a pot(30 gallon still a Pot).. yeah it blows like the wind and the banana's not nearly as good when grown in the ground.. Fixing to plant my Veinte Cohols where I buried my fish and crab leftovers..
