Which of the 2 fruiting sexes that one be? I got all excited this year when I won some seedlings in a raffle. Planted the first one at 2 ft high and all it had was male flowers. The guy they came from said he cut the top one of his male paps and it sprouted and changed sex to female. What a weird plant.
I did the same and am waiting for flowers to show. Either female or bisex. It's a yellow fleshed pap and it's the only one I can eat besides red lady. Others I tried tasted like vomit!

Is it just the time of day or are they growing in shade?
Is it because of the pot?
If it is why don't you bury the pot flush with the ground?

Its in full sun the upper leaves make the picture look like its in the shade and the fruit is heavily shaded from the upper leaves. They suck to much water to bury the pot.. I like keeping the pan full.. :^)

09-24-2013, 07:16 AM
The 2 flower buds showing make it likely that it's a female or a hermie. When they grow bigger we will be able to tell since female flowers will be fatter than the hermie flowers. Male flowers pop out as clusters of skinny flowers.
The pics in this link show the 3 types.

In addition to what Dan said Female buds usually come from the center and the male blooms on a Herme as Dan so puts it, grow to the sides of the female buds. The pic looks like you have some developing to the sides of the flower but until it grows there is no way of telling. I've have one bud where 2 female flowers developed into fruit hanging from the same stem on a herme as you can see below.. It was raining so its not a perfect picture.. :^)

This is just what I have noticed .. so plant some seeds and see for your selves .. When you transplant it look at the roots. you plant several seeds then when 18 to 20 inches tall you compare root size the smaller size roots are males. Small in width because these plants do not have the ability to bear and grow fruits .. Just my .02
again in a few week I will plant seeds for next years trees and I will be able to see root size difference I will cull out the thin rooted plants

Yes --- I was amazed at the great prices. Can't wait for my yellow fleshed paps to produce next year. Got Gold Maradol and Solo Waimanalo low-bearing seeds in the ground.
For those that don't know be sure to plant at least 4 seeds per location to guarantee at least one plant is female or hermie. Yank out the others and leave just one fruiter. Otherwise you will enjoy clusters of male flowers and no fruit. :ha: It's a good idea to leave one male equidistant from the others for plantings of 20 or less.

Dan how long is it from a plantable seedlings to a ripe fruit.
One season more or less. This is my first time growing these things. This years 2 tries turned out to be male plants even after the guy I got it from swore one was female. Wasted 7 months.
I had the fruit at the club tasting table in the spring and it tasted great - yellow flesh. Most paps taste like vom to me except Red Lady. The supermarket ones are so bad I wouldn't insult the critters by using them for bait in the live trap.
BTW --- the low this AM was 55F. Where's my hat and gloves and parka!
I read this and was fascinated.Growing papaya: Tips for success, seed to harvest - Los Angeles Times (http://articles.latimes.com/2012/jul/31/news/la-lh-how-to-grow-papaya-20120730)

WAMMO this was so sweet and dark orange. Darker than any I grow and larger than X77. So I put the seeds in my suit case. Oh yes I went back just to be sure it wasn’t a fluke bought 3 more all were great. I got them planted in a tray :-) in the back yard! I did it as I walked in .. My wife said Gee its nice you came home. Now I’m waiting till next season to try some of these Papayas home grown. In my Papaya patch. Truly the best tasting I have ever eaten.. ha ha ha .. All this talk of Red Lady made me break down and buy a potted RL from Lowes. It definitely had single narrow flowers at the axils indicating it's a hermie. Planted it nearby the only yellow maridol that sprouted from 8 seeds planted in a 12 inch circle. No flowers on that one yet. I'm gonna get some fruit this year at least!
Great on your bloom! Mr. Cocoa thinks I'm nuts because I am not a "tropical growing area native" but I swear I'm getting nearly as good spotting papayas as I am spying figs at 500 paces or more. (Short bananas and cannas can still fool me from a distance.)
His landlady had one that she didn't plant which was bearing fruit; she hates them so it's been chopped down. Shame but I do understand; the plant is beautiful but I'm not a fan of the fruit either. I wish I could love it; I don't.

most people are turned off by the smell of the seeds. the fruit itself taste great to me depending on how sweet. i usually use it as a filler for drinks along with other more tart/flavorful fruits and then a splash of milk.

I felt the same way about papaya for a long time till I had the yellow Maridol. The taste is great. The Red Lady is good. But not as good as the yellow Maridol.
You can get the seeds from here ----- papaya seed Aloha Seed Herb store (http://shop.alohaseed.com).

Paps don't need space. Just a small area of ground and then they rise above everybody else. I have both about 5 ft from each other with 2 VC mats in between. Leaves have very long petioles and let in plenty of sun.
I just have to doge the stems and leaves when passing by on the lawn tractor.

Sounds like a banana plant; which is right up my alley. You'd think by now I'd stop being surprised at how fast they can grow but no sir:
Last night I was digging around out there and decided to fill a five gallon that had some leftover seaweed in it and threw the whole thing outside with some wood ash and buried scraps. It was pushing a leaf last night and by this morning it was already out LOL :D

Agreed! I know the old veggies and stuff wouldn't break down immediately but I but them in to motivate the worms and critters to start moving around in that area and aerate the soil a bit for my naners, of course the eventually broken down vegetation will help too. And I've heard incredibly amazing things about seaweed; really excited to see how my garden does with it. I've started mulching some of my container plants with it ;D

I tried it in Spaghetti sauce.. two different times! Wasn't bad Wasn't good either. But I had read where in Thailand it was popular in some dishes. I like the tea made from the leaves. I took one good living leaf and allowed it to dry. Stuck it in my food processor. just copied other tea bag sized and amounts and it was pretty good stuff. Ive made it quite a few times..

As to X77 that link has quite a bit of info plus two years of photos on the size and growth. X77 are sweet and smaller than other Papaya.. I like them! plus there are pictures of size comparison on that thread.
Im in south Florida. Where its nice and warm . But my Papaya take the cooler weather pretty darn good . water at least every other day and fertilize every 15 days ( compost, cow manure, NPK fert 9 3 8 ) Mineral supplement also Azomite 3 times a year.. Remember I have sand here so I need mineral supplements.
It is my opinion all Papaya grow very much the same :ha: And the taste of home grown is outstanding! seeds take 14 days to germinate .. Not always but rely on slow germination..

I had a chance last year to sample the x77 Waimanalo at the tasting table of my rare fruit club. Yellow flesh. It was the first pap, other than Red Lady, that I could enjoy without declaring ----"this tastes like barf!"
This year I panted the RL and the x77 seedlings. Can't wait for the result. Both taste good. X77 is better.

Excellent. Thank you very much for your input. I have germinated some Sunrise, Sunset and x-77 after the squirrels destroyed my plants last year. I was wondering if the Red Lady was better than those, but I will probably just concentrate on keeping the seedlings safe from new squirrel damage.

Glad to spark some green papaya discussion! It's grown a lot locally so I can loko more into using it in some dishes (love spice).
Sounds like your climate is pretty similar to mine which'd make sense since we're only a couple of miles apart. I read that sand was already high in minerals so I thought I only needed to add organic matter; what's the Azomite for? And I didn't know papaya germinate so quickly; I better get some seeds I got planted them :nanadrink:

My soil is sand, there actually was a bean farm where my house sits. So no coral to speak of other than 4 inches where the farmer used it to make a parking pad for his equipment.
AZOMITEĀ® | Frequently Asked Questions | Facts | Science (http://www.azomite.com/faq.html)
That link is to azomite faq and it pretty much covers any and all questions you could ever ask. I use it because I get great results from applying it yearly about every 120 days . I might even add some from time to time extra but not to often. So I guess the answer to your question is I use Azomite to re-mineralize my sand/soil.. The difference for me is about 40% better. Yes I have actually raised plenty of Papaya before using it . once I put it on 4 trees and I was shocked at the difference.
At present I have 7 fruit bearing sized Papaya but that will soon change back to 10-12

I agree with you; there are some really huge pots (like you can grow small trees in) at the depot store for 12 bucks or so, but I'm not sure how many gallons they are. Is there any way to estimate how much gallons a container is? Say the diameter times the height or something? I don't mind upsizing my papaya into one of those; already have fertilizer on hand to feed it :)

I have checked with a few local nurseries; they were a bit stingy with the larger ones but were kind enough to give me some of the starter/gallon pots.

Search Craigslist. I have found used 25 Gallon ones on CL for $7, 18 Gallon for $5.
Thanks for the recommendation; unfortunately as I live on a non-US island I do not come under the umbrella scope of places Craigslist can ship to :)

Oops, sorry I missed your location. My apologies.
Hope my CL recommendation might help someone else though.

Six whole papayas nice. Turns out the one I've been grooming for a few months is a male LOL
Disappointed but I have two other seedlings coming along so not completely back to the drawing board; here's to hoping at least one of them is female/hermaphroditic :)
