Every year since I planted this in 2010, OK it hasn't been but three years, this mat has produced at least one good sized bunch. It was my first non store bought banana and to date also my best tasting banana I've grown. More people, climate permitting, should give these a try and see through the horse food stigma these have.

I have no doubt there may be better ones but these are so easy. I just plant it, mulch it and forget it and it reliably rewards me. Yesterday I saw a new bloom pushing out the top.

No I did not see a half leaf or a flag leaf.

Why?

The mat is so Tall, full of P-stems and leaves you just don't see them until suddenly there is a bloom poking out. They will have plenty of time to mature before the cold weather gets here.

Currently Hanging Bunchs
Four Orinoco
One Tall Namwah
Now I just need my Goldfinger to quickly push a bloom.

Yes Tony I know this thread is worthless without pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now a little off topic

BUT

It is a public service announcement!!!

For all you Fig Heads

This is the premere event in the Southeastern USA this month and probably next month and maybe the year.

LSU Fig Trial Field Day

If you are close and have any interest in figs you should not miss this opportunity. This is the real deal. Experts in all things Fig, Dr. Charlie Johnson and his team, are hosting this event and everything from tasting various varieties to maintaing your fig orchard will be covered. You will actually be able to walk in the research groves and see how they prune the trees for optimal production. There will even be a chef to discuss the use of figs and food pairings.

Figs They're not just for Grandma to can anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope some of you can attend. The event is from 0800 - 1200 at the Burden Research Center in Baton Rouge. After the event some of us from the Figs4Fun forum are going to catch a bite, talk figs and socialize a little. Anyone wishing to join us is welcome.

PM me for more information!

The fig community is a lot like the Banana people. Very nice and giving people. You can pickup plants for free or dirt cheap and cuttings are usually given for free. Especially for those who live in Southern Louisiana and along the Gulf Coast where there are many fig growers and many excellent varieties.

Besides what else are you going to do from June through November waiting for your bananas to get ripe?

Come see and taste for yourself!!!!

I've tasted Orinoco fruit. They are delicious!!!...provided you wait till they are ripe enough to eat without cooking. Otherwise they taste like dry cardboard or something. But if you wait till they are brown and kinda 'nasty looking' (compared to store-bought), they are quite good!

You are exactly right on the wait till they are ripe. That is very critical. I tell everyone to wait till they are ugly then wait one more day. My palate detects Blackberry with a lemon finish. They are moist, very smooth and not coarse grained and dry like store bought. Dang I still got four more months before mine are ripe.

Charles.... Right on about the "old reliable, "I've got 2 Orinocos setting fruit now, they are probably from the same mats which you have. Also looks like I may get to taste a Namwah this year also.

Bo you definitely will get to taste the Tall Namwah unless an "Act of God" occurs or you decide to go "Walk About" to some foreign country. l plan on us having a nanner tasting dinner in the fall! Maybe we can get lucky and have Goldfinger too.

Yeah, I thought they had a raspberry flavor. Definitely much tastier than blah blah boring store-bought gran nain.

How is that new well working out watering those orinocos and your other stuff??
Are you saving any money and getting return on your investment?

The well is performing great. I am saving a minimum of $50.00 dollars a month and on the dry months it is over $125.00. The well will break even by June 2014 if not earlier. I still have not had the time to complete my inground irrigation but have run enough lines to water with standard impact sprinklers on four foot poles all my citrus, blueberries, bananas and figs simultaneously. Running through hoses is not efficient but it works for now. When the irrigation is finished it will be even better.

This was a great investment.
