Went to to clean up around the Ae Ae and saw a black racer under the fence coming from the yard next door. Reached down to chase him and he thrashed about but stayed put. He was stuck in the 1/2 inch hardware cloth I put down to keep mulch contained in the beds. Must have had a mouse for lunch and couldn't pass all the way thru.
Thought I'd get a pair of diagonal cutters and cut the wire a bit to release him. When I came back he panicked, and thrashing about came loose and took off. Glad he did cause I probably would have gotten bit trying to set him free using a small towel to pin down.

Racers are aggressive biters, esp when cornered like that.

It might have been a gravid female too. That time of year! Congrats for having a good rodent catcher around!

I never would kill a non venomous snake. If they get in the pool enclosure I catch em and put in the vacant lot next to me. Handled a lot of snakes when I was a kid. With garter snakes I found that they calm down if you hold them for awhile. Then I'd put em in my shirt pocket to go to sleep. Carry em around for the rest of the day and let em go before going home. Sort of a day pet. The only poisonous one I dispatched quickly was a bamboo viper. Didn't wait for confirmation or pics. Deadly poisonous little buggers.

I mowed over a black racer in tall grass a couple of years ago - ruined my whole day. They are the good kind. Cotton mouths are a different story.
