Cool.... We got cousins maybe lol......Was your Avocado pot bound?
Are you planning on planting it in the ground?
Mine still sitting on the bench I was wondering exactly what to do with it since I've killed several others lol by planting them in the ground!

Just curious:}:waving:

Make sure you give them protection in the winter. Mine froze and died. :( Before planting in the ground I like to soak the 3 gal pot in a 5 gal bucket half filled water for a few hours.

Actually the root ball was not pot bound but I am going to grow in a pot so I re-potted anyways. I also killed a lot of grape vines, orange trees, lime trees and almost my first bananas by planting then in the ground. My soil do not drain good that's why I am moving to a 100% potted garden, like you can see on the picture. I got 50 used pots from 15,25, and 40 gal for $20.00 so not a bad option for me.

I also added sand to my potted mix.

I have been told that only 1 in 10 avocado seeds will make a plant that will produce fruit.

Thanks for purchasing one of our trees. We don't ship directly into Lowe's, they are delivered via a consolidator. It's nice to hear where their final home is!

You can plant the tree now if you want, but you will need to keep it protected during any cold weather during the winter. Or you can keep it in the pot it's in for another couple of months and then transplant to a 14" diameter pot. This will make it easier to move inside during any cold weather and it will have a thicker trunk to help get it through any cold weather next year. It will need to be protected until the trunk is at least 4 inches in diameter or for as long as it's possible to do so.

Watering will need to be consistent while it's in the pot. Every 3 days is usually just fine.

Thanks, again,

Alison

What's the ? for lol

Also here is the reply to my question of will the Avocado produce in a 14" pot:}:2738:

Snookie; You will need to pot it into a 17" diameter pot when it looks top heavy or is approximately 2.5 inches in diameter. I'd recommend a 24" diameter pot after that. Usually you can see the roots coming out of the bottom of the pot when it's time to repot.

I planted my avocado in April of this year and it's been growing alot, no fruit yet. It's about 5 feet tall. I have a heavy soil ground. I dug a big hole, almost 3 times the size of the pot. I mixed Miracle grow citrus soil, gypsum and compost. I would give it treatment of root stimulator once a week for about a month. At first you have to give it alot of water and easy on back, they don't like wet feet. They do drop alot of leaves but if new one are coming out, there is no need to worry.

I am having issues posting pics. As soon as the issue is resolved I will post pics of it.

I got me another Avocado plant this one is a lot smaller and I know it will take a long time to bare fruits but that is OK.I am not sure how the variety will do in Texas but I heard it will do ok if kept away from the cold the variety is Avocado ‘Day’ variety. (picture below)

Hi Mr. Mayor,

A little late but this is informative.

Citrus Growers Forum :: View topic - Soil Medium For Potted Pomegranate (http://citrus.forumup.org/viewtopic.php?t=8160&highlight=&mforum=citrus)

I planted a Mexicola and a seedling of Mrs. Holland. I dug a hole seven feet wide and a foot and a half deep. I amended the soil with Pine Bark compost at almost 50/50 and mixed it completely with one of those two cycle garden tillers until it was one homogenous mix. It was all tamped and the left overs formed a mound about a foot tall. Both plants were planted in the mound about two feet apart. They look decent now and the Mexicola retained an Avocado that it had prior to planting. What are the odds that I will get before a critter?

I would say leave it in pot until it gets bigger (about 4' tall). It will not last in the winter. And plant it in ground around April or May, it will have enough time to develop those root. Always take extra precautions during the winter.

I live in 8b/9a and I will build a green house around mine this winter and will not let it get below 35 this year and probably for several years. Once I get about 3' caliper trunk it shoud take down to 15 degrees with out any problems.

How are your harvest results, have you been able to compare numbers with others in your area?

I am amazed that mix works in Pensacola, it would devastate the harvest here and you actually get more rain on average.

If you're getting large harvests, keep doing it. It must be working.

The jury is still out. These are new plantings however my original soil was pure sand with little to no organics. I also planted on the mound. The sand will grind up the organics in quick order and will wash right through. I have planted many things using this mix and had no problems. Many nurseries in the South plant all of their plants in straight Pine Bark Compost. It drains well and has decent aeration. What concerns did you have?

As far as others in my area, I know of no one except Skeet (SBL) who has an Avocado tree. There probably is but we are the pioneers here.

Where to plant an avocado is very important. A tall mound may work, but I prefer the side of a mountain or hill. Pure sand with little to no organics would be my top soil choice, drainage is important but so is moisture retention.

This year will be the worst harvest in more than 10 years, my soil drains well and doesn't hold much moisture but we had too much rain these past few months.

The fruit size will be normal, but I'm hoping for about 20% of a normal harvest.

2 races, many varieties, and many trees.

I did replanted right away and added some root hormones and a bit of Super-thrive to the water. I think 95% is about right. I will post a pic again in 30 days.
