First, some info.

I got this banana at my local Patel Brothers (an Indian grocery store) the plant was about a foot and a half tall with two leaves for ten bucks. i couldn't believe that you could get a banana plant here on long island, so grabbed one. i went on the internet looking for more info on bananas, found this forum, and guess what happened next? now, i'm planning to get two or three more :ha: . this banana, i stuck it in the garage over the winter with a couple feet of p-ste, in a pot with a leaf still attached, and it survived everything that came its way. it has only been outside for about ten days now and has grown 3 new leaves. all the damage to the plant happened during a large storm we had. I have noticed that there is some red on the leaf stalks,i don't know if that shows up in the pics.

originally, i could care less what banana i had, but now i want to know if the variety i have is even edible. i think its either a cavendish or a basjoo, what else would you find here? well, here are the pics (they are sideways, sorry. I couldn't figure out how to flip them. Maybe someone else?)(also, photos taken from phone, so forgive quality):

Hi,

It looks like an ABB. The petiole channels were closed over. The pseudostem wasn't particularly mottled. There was a glaucous bloom. "Silver Bluggoe" and many other ABBs have that "look".

Most likely it might bear stout angular "cooking" bananas - which can be eaten raw when fully ripe.

But then again, I eat Horn plantains when they are overripe and they are delicious!

Umm, actually, the petioles weren't closed. I think it may have been the andle. Also, what is a "glacous bloom"?
Also, do ABB bananas have red coloring on the petioles? i assumed that that would be a trait of AAA.

Does basjoo have red petioles?

if the banana is ABB, what common variety would it be? it can certainly be nothing rare. I bought it at my grocery after all, and this is LI. not really tropical paradise.

I really hope it's edible...

Orinoco? tall or dwarf? note, the pstem width at the botttom of the plant is the actual one, the top had a few layers peeled away due to various erasons.

Now where would my grocery have gotten orinocos on LI? that is the only thing that confuses me. after all, this isn't bananaland (unfortunately).

Maybe you could ask at the store where you bought it
