I purchased 5 Basjoo to plant around my above ground pool. Its a 5' tall soft sided pool, and I originally thought I would just have them all in containers around the pool, but wanted to know if it would be possible to put them in the ground around the pool? Would there be an issue with roots going under my pool? and I am in zone 7b and would like to leave them out.
Thanks

They should be fine, if pups get too close you could always dig up the pup and move it. Keep the chlorine away from them.

Thanks. I think I will, and maybe put a couple feet away.

I would suggest 5+ feet away if you have the room or encourage them to grow away from the pool as they pup. I have two Basjoo patches that are already 5-6 feet in circumference & 12+ tall after 3-4years. They are enjoyenable at this stage and you will hate to cut them back. Also I planted mine in loomy soil that I prepared and the ground bulges upward a good bit as they have matured. Depending on your soil it could lift up the area around it. I also depend on the new pups to replace the ones that are fruiting and dying off so I would allow for some puping to sustain them.

The roots of bananas are non-invasive, and will not breach the lining of the pool. I recommend giving them plenty of space to spread their roots outward away from the pool though.

Thank you. I do have another question tho. My sister gave me what she thought
Were banana plants but my husband said they are canna lily plants
They are about the same size as my banana plants i just got
And look almost identical. So i would like to know how do you tell
Them apart? The leaves and stems look the same.

a guy at work planted some around his pool..now when they pup I get free naners cus he dosent like the clumping look. they have been there 5 or 6 years without a problem.

MOST cannas will flower around 4-5 tall and then you will know what you have ( type of canna) they also pup more than naners and the stems are no where near as thick

The basjoo should have a pink midrib as cannas should not.

A Google search will give you a definitive comparison .
