My neighbor has been growing these for about 5 years... The only winter protection that he provides is just to chop them off at ground level... Knoxville doesn't have very bad winters, but I thought that it was cold long enough to kill most bananas without protection... He is unsure what they are and says that it started with one plant, and he just let them multiply...

Michael,
How tall do they get in a season there in Knoxville? Thanks,
Paul

Thanks, sunfish, I assumed that they were Basjoo, but didn't think that even they could survive with almost zero preparation for the cold...

pniksch, last fall they were about 10 feet when he chopped them down... Right now the tallest stems are just over 6 feet, and all of the adult plants are over 5 feet...

Zone 7? Yeah they can survive it perfectly well without protection. :) If the guy just wrapped the stems during the winter with even bubblewrap or insulation, - He could get them to flower and fruit.
