That looks like one of the cold-hardy types...probably A. arguta, right? They must always stay moist...never dry out at all or they will quickly die. They also are not fond of heat. Being in zone 9 you might be better off with A. deliciosa.
There's a lot of good info here...but keep in mind it is written for the Oregon area where they grow the cold hardy arguta varieties commercially.

Agreed with the last post. It looks much too dry to me. I've got A. arguta and even in the wettest place in cont. US, our summers tend to be dry (nearly all rain is concentrated in spring, fall, winter) and so I still have to keep good tabs on mine.
Btw interesting way of keeping it up. Always make sure the trees and especially the wire can handle them in the future, some kiwis like A. arguta are VERY productive and VERY heavy in fruit.

A weird thing I forgot to mention (and maybe I read it in that article that I linked to) is that hardy kiwi is like catnip to cats and they can damage the plants. I haven't noticed any damage on my still potted kiwis by my cats or even the strays around, but it was reported to be true. At least if you ever see something that looks like your kiwis were absolutely trashed you will have an idea of what may have happened.

Cool thanks, if I find them trashed I happen to have a remedy to take care of the situation:}

I have been growing the exact same type. I have 3 females and 2 males. My vines are 3 years old and I have not gotten and fruit yet. I have been thinking it needs more sun light.
Crispy leafs = Lake of Water
Yellow leafs /w green veins = To much water
I have the same problem because the Kiwi needs more water then everything else in my yard.
