Okay, I know this a board around bananas but I like other tropicals too. Anyone know anything about growing Pineapples? I have tried sprouting heads off pineapples I purchased to no avail. Any mail order sites to get baby plants?

I have grown pineapples. Sprouting from another top is very easy, just make sure you peel off a good amount of the lower leaves which will expose the new "roots-to-be".

For whatever it's worth, I don't really recommend growing pineapple unless you have some extra space you're just looking to fill. It takes over a year to produce a single fruit, and then it needs to be replaced, since it will only fruit once. There's a lot more productive fruits/vegetables that can be grown in the space.

Here's some places you can order the plants:

I am currently growing pineapples in pots and such. They are easy to care for and don't die if you have the right soil.. When going to the store look for head that have roots, the fruit you purchase with it is the bonus. I stick them in the ground right off, and I have 7 growing.. They do produce pups & suckers so not like you only get one plant. Keep them above 50F you'll be good. They like Banana Fuel too. :^)

From what I have heard from others is to not buy the Del Monte brand pineapples, as they have drilled holes in the growing portions. I have had no problems getting Dole brand pineapples to grow roots in a glass of water. Remember though, that you have to change the water at least once a day because if you do not it will kill the pineapple top. In fact, one of my pineapples that I started from a top in January or February of last year has already bloomed and has a 3-inch pineapple growing on it currently.

I also was very successful with a pineapple top from a store bought pineapple. I made sure I had one that looked nice and healthy. I actually got 2 plants out of it, two shoots that came off the original top, which eventually died and rotted away. The one plant is about a foot tall now, and the other one is about 6 inches. Both are in pots and have been for a couple years now.

Like a previous post said, peel off the fruit at the base of the top which will expose the roots, and be careful not to water it too much.

Good luck.

Once you get the knack of it, growing pineapples is really easy as others have posted. I use good old Miracle Grow potting soil once I get it rooted.
