It was looking great but then it started developing little orangeish yellow spots that would then die and turn brown.

Did you plant it out recently? Looks like sun burn to me.

I did plant it recently, but they were somewhere else in the sun for a while and didn't get these spots.

I'm with MM4birds, looks to me like water-sunburn. What time of day do you water, and how often? Do you water the entire plant, or only around the base?

Early morning, and around the base. I never water mid day and if I do I never spray the leaves.

Interesting. So how does the rest of the plant look? Is it only one or two leaves showing signs, while the rest looks healthy and hale?

When I plant mine, I put a piece of window screen over them to give them some time accumulate.

Some more of the leaves are starting to get the spots on them but the new and emerging leaf is appearing to be healthy so far, so we'll see how this goes.

Yes, ensete seems to be prone to sunburn. I stick a couple cheap tiki umbrellas in the garden over mine until they adapt. Also look very carefully for mealy bugs. I spotted them on mine with a magnifier. Leaves were getting worse and I knew it wasn't the sun. I treated with fungicide and insect spray. Seem to be ok now.
Good Luck!:2738:

here in central Florida we find that our maurelii prefer the filtered sun through the too many pines trees we have. They seem to stay more reddish and less flimsy looking. Most of ours are in containers which are too small for them but they don't seem to mind their digs. Have plans of putting them in cut down 55 gallon plastic drums and hope they won't be too much trouble to care for.
Good growing and stay healthy.
Post pics.

Ok awesome because that's where I have them! Between a black walnut and pecan tree, it receives filtered sun for the biggest part of the day. I think the sunburn may have been from when HomeDepot had them sitting in full sun and it may have not showed until I planted it.
