I bought a mystery banana plant back in Aug and got it identified as a Grand Nain through the help of this forum. It's been in a pot all winter and hasn't grown much after October 2012. Last month I noticed a green leaf popping out of the soil and believe it may be a pup. However its my first banana plant so I'm not sure if it is actually a pup. I thought it was something that took time, and never happened in potted bananas. My plant is still on the smaller end.
Does anyone know ? When is the best time to move the pup into another pot? thanks!

Basically ANYTHING coming out of the soil other than the stem of the main plant that appears banana-esque is probably a pup (unless it's a weed, which would be obviously NOT a pup). There is no particular 'time' to pup.....every variety sends up more or less at a sooner or later time. As for separation, you need to wait much longer for that! Best time to separate them is probably when the 'pup' is at least 2-3 feet tall. Before that, they are mostly dependent on the root system of the main plant and may not do well after separation. This is especially true in a pot....basically, just leave it on there and enjoy.

Like I said, it's my first banana plant & I've had it since August (kept it indoors throughout winter). I assumed it was a pup, I just didn't think it would be something that would happen in a pot and indoors since my banana plant hardly grew.
But thanks everyone! I have a long time to wait since it's only an inch tall lol.

Hi John,
if it yips, it is a pup for sure, but even if is doesn't, it is most likely one, as long it is proceeded
by a pointed green leaf. :ha:
