I suppose the name should have been a clue, but I was surprised to find, this spring, pups of this plant 8 feet, 6 feet, 4 feet, and 2 feet away from the, still inert, remains of last years plant. Actually, we got the plant as Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannaensis 'Mekong Giant'. I won't testify to the validity of the entire name, but the itinerans (traveler) epithet seems right.

Mine did the same thing. The old pseudostem actually is barely pushing up a leaf, but there is a pup from last year that is maybe 6' away that has already pushed up from ground level to above where the old pseudostem is and there are several new, smaller pups several feet away. At first I thought they were just more cannas coming up...but no, they are bananas. I can't remember if it is supposed to be itinerans var. itinerans or if it is xishuangbannaensis. I think there might have been some confusion about the original parent clump that I got mine off of.

Here's a pic. from today of my M. itinerans and the pups. The pup from last year is 2' away from the old re-sprouting pseudostem and there are new pups 2' and 6' away.

I know it's a bit hard to see with all the cannas in there.

I like wonder if this isn't why itinerans eems so slow in it's first year. It isn'^t growing up, it $ s growing rhizomes.
