I've been growing these for about two years and I don't know what they are. Neither does the guy who gave me my first plant. Can anyone help to identify and explain why they think it is what it is (to help me identify in the future)?
Thanks in advance!

Your avatar has been fixed for you, mcflied. See rule #1 Bananas.org Rules (http://www.bananas.org/rules.php#1) which you just agreed to upon joining.

Hi harveyc! I didn't think my avatar was inappropriate. My avatar was a picture of a woman eating a banana with a guy smiling. What is the problem with that?
Also, any idea on the type of bananas that I am growing? I really appreciate all the help.
Thanks!

Your avatar was very sexually suggestive and I think you know very well that was the case. Don't play games; I don't have time for it.
It is impossible to ID your banana until it flowers except to say that I don't think it's Basjoo with the read streaks on the underside of the leaf of the small plant.

Hi HarveyC,
The red on the underside is not a usual characteristic of the leaves of these plants of mine. Usually there isn't any red (until the leaves are dying, then reddish brown perhaps).
So when it flowers, that helps to identify it the most? I can't wait till mine flower. I haven't had one flower yet (maybe the big one will flower this year--fingers crossed).
I also want to grow something tropical and colorful along the row of bananas. Yellow is my favorite color... what do you guys/girls grow nearby to add color?
I started with one and can't wait to keep them multiplying! I want to line the whole property with these plants. I have 4 that I can readily transplant. I wish the summers were longer.
Anyhow, I wasn't playing games. So avatars of anyone eating a banana is suggestive? I guess that is where i disagree. I'm not trying to be vulgar or anything here on the forum. *sigh*
Thanks for your help.

Flowers are very helpful in identifying a variety along with petioles, leaf coloration, etc. I have a couple of Basjoo blooming now.
What part of the bay area are you from? I can make you a very good deal on some very large pups/corms if you come and do the digging. :) Sorry, don't have time for more details now, getting ready to head out for a few days.

Hey HarveyC,
I'm in Pleasanton (east bay). How about you? My goal with my bananas is to keep multiplying until I have no more room. I might be interested. Not trying to spend a lot of $$ right now. Send me some pics perhaps? PM? Sounds like a plan. Have a good trip!

In no way was harveyc being sexually suggestive... :ha:
Hmmm... I happen to have a 'few' extra pups to spare (some are too big to ship) & I just happen to be in need of a small tree that I've been able to track down to the Bay area (nothing here in Sacratomato, of course... since Capitol Nurseries shut down).
Maybe I smell a swap coming down the pipes? :bananas_b
How do ya feel about a couple "real" Blue Java & a small horde of sorta-dwarf Orinocos?

Hey Bob3! That sounds like that may work. I'm in Sacramento every once in awhile and perhaps on my next trip up I could bring your tree and we can do the swap! Let's PM each other so we can work out the details. I'm not sure when I'm going to Sac next but I will find out!
